A sudden strong wind blast swept central Arkansas injuring scores of people and causing structural damage across several towns. Emergency crews rushed to hospitals as winds damaged roofs overturned signs and knocked down trees. Authorities warned residents to seek shelter and avoid affected areas.
Reports from Little Rock say twelve people died and over thirty injured as a tornado struck central Arkansas yesterday. Wires were down, rail lines torn, and phone service crippled, with damage estimates near three million dollars.
Representative-elect Eas Clayton Grant called a mass meeting for Saturday night at 8 at the Court House to assemble representative citizens and discuss legislation for the next General Assembly. Richmond Va Dec 27 President Stephens of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad issued a circular stating that effective January 1 1917 a 5 percent salary increase will be given to each employee in offices at stations and in dining and parlor cars not covered by agreement who have been in service at least a year and whose salary has not advanced since January 1 1916.
The Farm Loan Board announced locations for the new Federal farm loan banks in twelve districts. Cities named include Springfield and Baltimore plus St. Louis and Spokane among others. Each bank will have 750000 capital and lend up to 50 percent of land value with 5 to 40 year repayment. Bonds will fund loans and bear interest about five and a half percent, adjustable by law. Banks aim to issue bonds as loans are approved.
