A fire of unknown origin in Henderson North Carolina completely destroyed the Henderson Furniture Company store on South Garnett street. The blaze caused heavy damage to adjoining buildings and stock with total losses around 25000 dollars and 18000 dollars insured. Nearby survivors include a hardware store a large mercantile establishment and the First National Bank as major losers.
Berlin and Washington report Germany Austria Hungary Bulgaria and Turkey respond to President Wilson asking belligerents to state their aims. They propose an immediate delegates meeting at a neutral city after the end of the present war to pursue lasting peace with cautious openness to cooperation once the fighting ends. Officials in Washington are surprised by the release before official copy arrived.
Robert T. Rivenbark 76, longtime Willard postmaster and Atlantic Coast Line agent, died after Christmas at his home. Survived by three daughters, four sons, four grandchildren, and two nephews. A devout church member and Mason, funeral arrangements were to be announced.
