Washington reports the 1916-17 cotton crop at 11,511,000 bales, down slightly from 11,191,820 the year before and far below the 1914 record of 16,134,930. State figures show North Carolina at 646,000 bales in 1916 versus 699,494 in 1915, and South Carolina at 920,000 in 1916 vs 1,133,919 in 1915.
In New Orleans on December 11 the cotton market saw a dramatic fall following the government estimate of 11,511,000 bales for the season. March contracts dropped 97 points, nearly five dollars a bale in three minutes, with other months also slipping substantially.
