Denenhareen August 11 Victor Adler head of the Austrian Socialists is reported dangerously ill from Vienna advices. He is the father of Dr Friedrich Adler who shot Austrian premier Count Stuergkh in October 1916. Adler has supported the government since the war began.
In Texington on August 11 Mrs. Walter B. E. Conrad opened an express parcel believed to hold cabbage plants and found an embalmed human arm. The sender’s name is illegible and Raymond Conrad, a brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad, is suspected as the arm’s possible source. Investigators traced the package to Mercer, Pennsylvania.
Ten men from Southern states trained at Fort Myer officers camp receive commissions under orders issued by Adjutant General McCain. Names include Charles C. Griffin of Burlington North Carolina and others from Louisiana Georgia South Carolina and Alabama. A second list from Fort Sheridan includes Prescott Huidekoper Milwood Virginia William Bibb Selma Alabama and Moody Springville Tennessee among others receiving infantry and field artillery commissions.

In New York on August 1 A Mead presented a 96 111 111 11 dollar check drawn by J P Morgan Co for the minister of finance and receiver general of Canada. The Liberty National Bank paid the amount marking the largest check ever recorded in the New York clearing house for the Dominion loan floated by Morgan headed syndicate. The prior record was more than 50 000 000 smaller.
