Chicago reports on the first ballot at the Republican national convention with favorite sons claiming 600 votes for Hughes. Developments show Hughes gains may shift to Root or Harding if a coalition forms, while progressives are kept from a three cornered race. Penrose avoids nominating Hughes and trades loom with New York’s 42 Root votes under Parnes influence.

Chicago June 7 The Progressive party debates third party ticket and a delay of the Bull Moose nomination. Roosevelt aides press for a quick nomination amid Republican action, while Bull Moose leaders push to proceed in normal convention fashion likely naming Roosevelt by Friday or Saturday.
Progressive leaders fear the Bull Moose convention will reject any candidate but Roosevelt and expect he will not accept such a nomination. Friends in Chicago have not announced his stance, but indicate Roosevelt will likely oppose the action.
Chicago June 7. A heated dispute over the Mexican plank in the Republican platform centers on Senator Fall of New Mexico pressing for a declaration in favor of intervention. Senator Borah of Idaho opposes. both are on the resolutions committee framing the platform. The convention opened with Harding delivering the keynote as the party outlines preparedness and other issues.
The notice advertises a voting bonus for new Daily News subscribers. It lists rewards: 5 000 votes for 8 new subscribers, 12 000 votes for 12, 22 000 votes for 18, 35 000 votes for 24, and 50 000 votes for 30 new subscribers. Only new subscribers count. shorter-term memberships do not qualify.
At the Ohio delegation's organize meeting Governor Willis was chosen chairman. Secretary of State Hildebrant becomes Ohio member of the credentials committee. Howland is named to the resolutions committee. H. C. Van Voorhis of Zanesville to the rules committee. William H. Hahn of Mansfield to the committee on permanent organization. R. K. Hynicka chosen national committeeman.
