Minot prepares for a large Harvest Festival on Sept 28 29 offering a popular vote to crown a Carnival Queen. A $250 diamond ring awaits the winner and costumes for the queen and attendants are provided from Minneapolis. Frank W Youngman notes aim to promote Minot and Northwestern North Dakota.
A cyclone near Kensal North Dakota at 3 a.m. Aug 31 caused about 15000 dollars in property losses with no fatalities. Farm machinery, horses, and barn structures were destroyed or damaged across several farms and towns including Kensal, Grand Forks area, and Crookston, with lightning strikes and high winds noted.
Washington September 1 The return to Washington of President Roosevelt and family early next month will trigger the social season. Miss Ethel Roosevelt has spent a quiet summer largely at her father’s Oyster Bay home and is ready for what may be the most notable year of her life as she is formally presented to society and reigns as the first young lady of the land mirroring the experience of Alice Roosevelt.
In Minneapolis the Journal Publishing company’s capital stock, publisher of the Minneapolis Journal, has moved to a syndicate led by Herschel V. Jones. Jones will take over business and editorial management. Thos. C. Heneghan becomes chief of police, replacing D. D. Davidson who resigned. Heneghan, previously night policeman, assumed duties on Sept. 4 with Frank Lanceford as night policeman.

After about two weeks in encampment at Lake American Washington Company E arrived home Monday evening. The trip included a two day hike and a look at real army life. The camp featured a central railway station and easy troop movement. Nearby fruit ripened as the unit travelled and sightseers visited Seattle after breaking camp on the 28th. Battleships and large steamers were seen in the harbor during the stopover.
The party traveled from Seattle visiting navy yards and large boats under construction. After leaving Seattle the journey proceeded through scenery to Wolf Point Montana where they paused four hours for camping and drying tents. The final leg resumed and the last train arrived Willis ton around ten o'clock Monday night.
The Lutheran Synod Church will hold services in the courthouse on the first and third Sundays each month at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday school runs every Sunday at 9:40 a.m. except the second and fourth Sundays when class starts at 2:30 p.m. Pastor M. Sophia Schmidt five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schmidt of Wahpeton died after drinking about six ounces of whiskey. The incident highlights dangers of alcohol access to children and prompted local health warnings.
Mrs. Fannie Riggs of Bismarck disappeared with her four children aged six months to 11 years on Monday August 4. Sheriff D J McGills of Burleigh county seeks her location and offers a liberal reward. She may use the name Fannie Bacon. She is about 39, 5 feet 7, light brown hair, blue eyes, 130 pounds. Describes her clothing as a black skirt, white blouse, long cravanette coat, brown veil and hat.
A Voltaire blaze destroyed three cars and 1000 bushels of grain in a storm time fire that swept a Crystal Farmers Elevator structure at Crystal, North Dakota. The loss, about 310000, falls on Crystal under unsettled ownership papers. Agent H C Bunde helped pull away adjacent cars, saving others as hay stacks and grain shacks northeast of town also burned.
North Dakota farmers and the North Dakota Durum Wheat Association argue durum wheat is undervalued. They note 22,000,000 bushels were grown last year and that durum bread tests show higher gluten content. Professors say durum flour yields more body, while market prices lag behind No. 1 northern by about 25 cents.
The city public schools start their regular session next Monday September 7. Superintendent C Ellithorpe leads a staff including Mary McAndrew Helen Shanley Nora Outram Elizabeth Coger Elizabeth Kinder Eleanor Bunston Myrtle Runke Beatrice Burleigh Elizabeth Webster Stella Young Emma McLaughlin Helena Steinbach Cora Burnfather. Two new teachers join the corps as rooms are fitted on the third floor to accommodate rapid growth. Overcrowding may push need for a new building next summer as the high school shares space with the first year class and eighth grade.
The third floor houses sixth grade and commercial department rooms. The school presents four years of academic work beyond primary to prepare for college or business, with courses in English, literature, algebra, geometry, physics, history, and electives like botany, zoology, chemistry, geography, mathematics, Latin, and stenography. The board aims to employ trained teachers and with building and heating upgrades expects a successful year.
Fargo reports Prof. E G Ladd North Dakota pure food commissioner said H M Burdick Aneta butcher convicted of selling sausage preserved with unpermitted sulphites and fined with costs totaling 872. Two more cases pending for trial soon. Commissioner vows prosecutions to stop preservative adulteration in foods.
In Pittsburg on September 1 reporters note that wives of hundreds of the city’s wealthiest men have been drawn into tax action after years of resistance. Assessors boast of uncovering more than 1,000,000 dollars in assessable paper, exposing bonds and mortgages previously avoided by the class.
