Poultry notes on feeding and care for chicks and fowls
Rolled oats suit baby chicks and dry feed benefits young birds. Damp houses raise disease risk. avoid wet feeding. Mites and kerosene sprays, sulfur, and wood ash are noted controls. Do not overfeed, avoid repetitive diets, and provide grasshoppers and bugs for young turkeys. Ensure good drainage, avoid overcrowding, and keep water available. Egg shells must be crushed before feeding to prevent ingestion by hens.
Saving the Soil Moisture and Harvest Tricks
Agricultural editor W C Palmer argues moisture controls North Dakota crop power and outlines steps to save soil moisture. Plow or disk after harvest, harrow to form dust mulch, and use shallow mulch to reduce evaporation. An experiment from Washington shows mulch depth affects moisture retention, with half inch mulch nearly as effective as four inches. Organic matter aids water holding, so manure and green manures help. A sidebar notes beet yields and a grandfather's method for early beets using fall plowing, spring dressing, and careful thinning to harvest around October for markets at about 60 cents a bushel.
