May Fifteenth Cleaning Up Day Sets City Effort

City leaders and civic groups in Williston plan a May 15 cleaning up day to clear streets yards and alleys of weeds and rubbish. A mayoral marshal will oversee hauling teams and a central burning point will be used for weeds under fire department control.

City Council Weighs Sidewalks and Power Plant Upgrades

The city council met Monday with all members present. Petitions for sidewalks on Third and Fifth avenues were accepted. Superintendent Mackenroth outlined needed repairs and new machinery for the light plant, totaling a little over 11,000 dollars. Adjournment moved to Tuesday then postponed to next Monday due to no quorum.

City School Exhibit Showcases Student Work

The city schools host an exhibit Friday afternoon from 1 to 6 PM featuring high school and grade woodwork cooking and sewing. Prizes donated by local businessmen go to top works. Parents and others are invited to visit the third floor display in the main building.

Williston Plans Welcome For 4th Night Out Visit

Mayor Jackson received a letter from C. S. Harrington secretary of the Minnesota State Automobile Association stating that during their endurance run this summer the group will stop in Williston on the fourth night out from the Twin Cities. He asks for arrangements for the visitors’ entertainment during the evening.

High School Declamation Contest May 9 at Library

Tuesday evening May 9 high school students will compete to represent the school in a declamation contest at the University May 19 and 20. Contestants include Katie Preble Lois Brown Genevieve Allen Maybelle Boystrom Florence McWilliams Colin Kerr Grover Johnson and Robert Mansfield. One winner from each gender will be chosen. a 35 cent admission is charged to cover trip expenses. The contest takes place at the public library building.

Williston Depot Exhibit Booth Improves in Appearance

The Williston exhibit booth at the depot has gained attention for a marked improvement in appearance. Old vegetables and worthless materials were replaced with new items. For collections contact D. Milloy at 38 me.

Williston welcomes Northwestern Development delegates

A twelve car special carrying 150 delegates from Duluth and the Twin Cities to the Northwestern Development Meeting in Helena arrived in Williston at 1 pm and was greeted by about 2000 residents led by Mayor Jackson and the Williston Concert band. Governor Eberhart and Mayor Haynes praised Williston’s growth as the train headed west at 2 pm.

Williston to Host Exhibition by Cue Masters

Williston spectators will see George Spears and Lew Shaw in an exhibition at Ideal Billiard hall. The event features three-ball games with no count, two balk line pool matches, and other fancy shots, with Shaw making his first appearance here.

Osteopathic Doctor Opens Sanitarium In City

Dr St James F Blanchard a Kirkville Missouri graduate of the American school of Osteopathy has bought out Dr Jackson’s practice and will open an Osteopathic Sanitarium with electrical baths east of the central school building. He plans to move in at the start of the week and Mrs Blanchard will join later this week. Dr Jackson departs to practice in Montana after being in Williston where he made many friends. Sheriff Olson Returns From East With Flight of Fugitives

Sheriff Olson came back to the city from an eastern trip with Melvin Howe who was convicted of horse stealing but granted a new trial. Howe fled to Kansas City as bondsmen withdrew their support. Olson also pursued Chas Biggs in Battle Creek Michigan after mortgaged property cases here and in Indiana. Biggs escaped jail using a stove shaker, and remains at large while wanted for multiple crimes.

Mayor Jackson and other residents arrange a Memorial Day program to be held at the Gates opera house with speeches and music. Afterward, old soldiers and citizens will march to the burying ground to decorate graves with flowers. veterans are asked to send names to Mayor Jackson promptly.

Williston High Debaters Reach Herald Cup Semi finals

Wil liston High School representatives John Harter Charles Shafer and Edna Kerr have won all preliminary debates and travel with Miss McAndrew to Minnewaukan for Friday’s semi final. Only Casselton Minnewaukan and Williston remain in contention for a final with Casselton. The Herald Cup is offered by the Grand Forks Herald.

Gypsy Tea Benefit for Mrs. Berry in Williston

The Indies of Williston stage a Gypsy tea benefit at the Odd Fellows hall on Friday May 5 to aid Mrs. Berry, whose husband serves time in Bismarck. Proceeds fund homestead support after hospital and county aid, with fortunes told 25 cents, tea cup art 15 cents, theater program, ice cream and cake served. all for a worthy family with five children.
