Washington April 27 The president signed a bill creating a new land district with headquarters at Williston The move assures a land office in the city and citizens cheer The establishment date remains uncertain with mid July as a possibility The work includes transferring records and entries from the Minot office before the new office can open

Minot Gets Convention

Democratic state central committee met in Grand Forks and chose Minot as the convention site for Thursday, August 2, with 414 delegates plus two at large. Mayor Greenleaf urged Minot hosting, Tracy Bangs backed Grand Forks, and a majority favored Minot. A cash prize will be awarded for the chosen convention name among many playful suggestions.

Name For Amusement Lane at the Fargo Fair

The North Dakota state fair in Fargo July 23 to 28 seeks a public vote on the amusement lane name. Voters must include a 50 cent contribution with their ballot. Many names have been proposed and more votes are sought to decide the final choice.

Cattle buyer murdered near Roseau North Dakota

John Stewart, a cattle buyer from North Dakota, was found murdered in brush twenty miles south of Roseau. Robbery is the likely motive. He was last seen December 23 walking from Wanask to Thief River Falls. Stewart's employer, who disappeared that same day, is suspected. Relatives live at Wheeler, North Dakota.

Jealous Man Fires at Porter at Larimore Depot

A colored man fired a shot at a porter as a passenger train stopped at Larimore depot Sunday evening. The porter was unharmed. The suspect was arrested and to be held until the porter’s return for a hearing. The motive given was jealousy.

Lands Restored to Public Domain and School Land Sale Vote

The Bismarck Tribune reports the university and school lands board met on Thursday April 26 approving Cavalier and McHedry county sales while disallowing the McLean county sale under constitutional restrictions on coal lands. Interior announces restoration of extensive North Dakota lands to settlement after irrigation project reviews.

The board authorized the commissioners to compel interest payment within thirty days or face cancellation of contracts. Spring leasings of state school lands were approved.
