Two prospective settlers from Ayrshire, P. S. McGuire and F. M. Van Harsen, perished in a box car fire on a Great Northern train near Gardner North Carolina. McGuire's son escaped severely burned and notified the conductor. The car contained farm implements eight horses and a cow and burned to ashes while the train was halted and the fire fought. The victims' bodies were sent to Fargo for morgue.
