Hon W L Stockwell, state Superintendent of Instruction, spoke on Present Tendencies of Education. He urged hand and head training, better rural school facilities, ventilation, and warned of the White Plague from poor air. The audience filled the church and teachers heard him at the institute.
North Dakota will see Soo Line expansion over the next two months as the Supreme Court ruling allows a Duluth on grade level terminal. The plan calls for a line from western North Dakota to Duluth via Williston along the Missouri River and surveys up to the county Ward boundary, then north to connect with existing lines.
Annual school election held at the school house on June 17 resulted in Jno A Corbett elected for three years and N Bellinger for one year. Greengard Bros adds a full line of ladies shoes.
Judge E B Goss known as Ben Goss, born 1872 in Michigan, educated at University of Michigan with LLB and LLM degrees, practiced in Bottineau before becoming district judge. He seeks Republican renomination, implying a second term and urging voters to back Judge Goss for me.
The judge responds to accusations that Ward county’s calendar shows 300 unresolved cases and that delays cost the public money. He notes population and wealth growth since 1905, explains district changes under a 1907 law, and clarifies his role across Bottineau McHenry Ward Williams counties and the attached McKenzie county.
The annual Teachers Institute of Williams and McKenzie counties opened Monday with Prof. GC C Schmidt from the University as conductor and Miss Davies and Miss McElfresh as assistants. Over 115 teachers attended, the largest gathering yet, praised by Mrs. Tatem for efforts and favorable weather. Schmidt, noted for city school leadership, lectured Wednesday evening at the opera house followed by a reception. attendees reported strong benefits from the event.
Wahpeton North Dakota June notice reports Erck A. Stafne, Republican candidate to succeed himself, withdrawing from the primary ballot due to party strife and state conditions. He thanks supporters and says he will remain in the GOP aiding what he sees as the state’s best interests.
Manager H C DeLaney of the Great Northern Telephone says work on cables and switchboard is being rushed and will be substantially complete by month end. Cables are in on main leads and once wired to the new switchboard patrons will notice a marked improvement in service.
