Senate bill would allow grazing leases on public lands in North Dakota
United States Senator Granns of North Dakota has introduced a bill to lease unsettled public lands for grazing with districts overseen by the secretary of agriculture. Leases would run one to five years at rates from one half of a cent to ten cents per acre per year, with preferences for bona fide homesteaders and current grazing occupants.

Weather Chief Appointed At U S Weather Bureau
Professor Charles Marvin chosen to lead the Weather Bureau succeeding Willis Moore removed. He comes from the instrument division and joined the signal service in 1884 from Ohio. Engineer Hines Killed Sunday In Avoca Wreck
Minot engineer Mike Hines died Sunday evening when his locomotive crashed into the rear of a work train near Avoca. The fireman and crew warned him to jump but authorities say he did not heed the signal. The engine overturned injuring Hines and delaying traffic for hours. His body was taken to Corning, Iowa, where a sister lives. he had twelve years of service in the region.

Injured Young Man Found On Prairie Near Springbrook
A nearly eighteen year old man named Hall was found Tuesday morning two miles from Springbrook by two motorists. He suffered a severe forehead wound and swelling, could not recall how long he had been there or how he was hurt, and said he once worked in the Great Northern roundhouse and mentioned a railroad fireman. He was taken to Williston for medical care.

Elks Enjoy Boat Excursion With Wives On River
The Elks and their wives enjoyed a river outing last Thursday. They left after 1 pm and traveled twenty miles downstream, returning about 9 pm and then continuing upriver to return by 10:30. The Williston band provided music for dancing and entertainment for a crowd over 200, with lunch baskets for a picnic dinner. Talks proceed about another excursion soon.

Mrs Joseph M Donohue Mayme E Shea wife of Joseph M Donohue died after six weeks typhoid illness. Born September 20 1891 she was 21. She married January 7 1913 and survived by husband parents Thomas and Mrs Shea three sisters Bridgie Katie Maggie and brother Willie. Services at St Josephs Church were held and burial in Williston cemetery.

Borsheim Wins School Additions Contract in Williston

Had Fine Trip Mr and Mrs Carney Visited East
Mr and Mrs E Carney and children returned Monday morning from a several weeks trip to eastern points. They traveled through the lakes to Cleveland then to Mr Carney’s old home in Pennsylvania. They attended the old soldier reunion at Gettysburg and visited Boston and Springfield Mass. The trip was enjoyable but Mr Carney says the west still looks better.
Hedderichs to Add Shoe Department Expansion
Preliminary work has begun on a new addition to Hedderich Department Store between the present building and the Graphic Block. Thomas Allen of Schafer confined in Williams county jail for murder of Brownie Emery was adjudged insane by a Minot jury after about ten minutes deliberation. Doctors Windell and Jones testified to paranoia and bouts of rational behavior, with Allen lying in wait to kill Emery who had shown interest in a rancher’s daughter. Witnesses Comeford and Gunie supported insanity claim. A J Bessie defended, C C Converse prosecuted.

Parcel Post Rates Change To Boost Business
A new parcel post change, effective August 15, 1918, increases the weight limit for fourth class mail within the first and second zones from eleven to twenty pounds. Postage for parcels over four ounces will be five cents for the first pound and one cent for each additional two pounds or fraction for local delivery, and five cents for the first pound plus one cent for each additional pound for delivery to other offices in the first and second zones.
