Railroads urged to ship harvest labor at 1 cent a mile

The Farm, Stock and Home calls on Congress to allow railroads to move labor to Dakota and Montana wheat fields for one cent per mile as severe labor shortages threaten the harvest. S. M. Owen warns conditions are graver than ever as notices show 10,106 workers needed across Minnesota, North and South Dakota, while city bureaus report few requests for help.

Brother Charlson Absent From City Due To Illness

County Treasurer Charlson, from Williston, stays at his city home for a few days then leaves for Lake Mills Iowa to visit a ailing brother C H Charlson, whose long cancer illness is considered hopeless. He will be away about two weeks and plans to visit relatives at Blue Earth City Minnesota during the trip.

Ambrose Newsman will sue industrial number next month

In the Passing Parade the Ambrose Newsman will sue an industrial number sometime next month. The village of Crosby seeks to incorporate a town well Tioga and Culbertson Montana. Palermo plans a harvest festival on August 7 with several hundred dollars already subscribed by local business men. The Minot Commercial club secretaryship seems to require hard knocks as Mark Dielson the pugilist becomes assistant to Secretary Youngman.

Grain Prize Contest in North Dakota 1909 Rules

North Dakota announces prizes for the largest and best collection of grains and grasses raised in the state during 1909. Exhibits must arrive in Bismarck by August 15 1909 and be shipped by express. Prizes range from 100.00 to 5.00 with specific counts and packing instructions, light weight boxes with air space to prevent dampness. Commissioner W Gilbreath oversees the contest.

Death in a Well Near Streeter

Frederick Liebig suffocated by gas while repairing a home well southwest of Streeter. He signaled a rope for escape but lost strength and fell back to the bottom, dying before rescue. His helper lowered the rope again but Liebig was dead when pulled from the well.

Dwire Resigns From Interior Department Post

Minot North Dakota July 23 James Dwire longtime land official and special agent with the land department has tendered his resignation. He plans to move west to practice before the interior department in newly opened regions possibly in Washington or Montana. Dwire has ten years in the interior department plus five years in timber country and the last five in North Dakota.

Fargo Defeats Commission Plan in City Election

Fargo voters rejected the commission form of government by 967 to 868. The First and Second wards swung the result against the plan while the other wards were closer. Commissioners carried five of seven precincts but failed to overcome opposition in key wards. Indications note a bumper harvest in North Dakota and strong Williams County prospects this year.

Nine Fins broke into a GN box war at Churles Ferry and stole beer and cigars. Each defendant received thirty days in jail and a $100 fine.

Lightning Fire Destroys Sanden Store and Shuts Local Bank

A bolt from a heavy storm followed a rural telephone line into the Paul Sanden general store in Meskinock North Carolina, igniting a blaze that destroyed the Sanden store for 2500 dollars, the Meskinock state bank for 2500 dollars, and the W H Paulson harness shop for 1800 dollars, with total losses around 6800 dollars. The fire quickly spread to adjoining buildings, prompting responses as firefighters battled the flames. An irrigation land advert nearby offers five acre tracts for sale with liberal monthly payments through A J Stafne.

Very Successful Mission Ends at St Michaels Ray

A two week Catholic Mission led by Father W H Purcell at St Michaels Church Ray concluded with a first communion mass at 8 am last Friday. Twenty one communicants will later be confirmed by the Bishop of Fargo once a new bishop is appointed. Names of communicants including James Lawrence Howlett and Thomas Philip Kinsella are listed along with those who had first communion earlier that day.

North Dakota researchers study coal and clay deposits

Grand Forks, N. D., July 2. North Dakota has vast clay beds and extensive lignite fields in the western part of the state. Prof Earl J Babcock, dean of the school of mines, directs over fifty experimental briquetting methods. Results suggest possible commercial profitability and a future supply of cheap fuel for the region. Ceramic and tile products are also tested, with pottery clay found across several areas and samples shipped to Ohio for evaluation.

Lightning Kills Woman Near Edgeley N D

Mirra D W Gilligan, wife of a farmer six miles from Edgeley, was instantly killed by lightning while walking around the corner of her home. She was about 40 years old and leaves seven young motherless children. Some hail fell north, but area damage was not large. Crops look better than in pioneer memory.
