Primus Sunk After Collision With Tug Hansa on Elbe

Hamburg July 23 185 passengers aboard the excursion steamer Primus were cut in two and sunk by the tug Hansa on the Elbe near Blankenese. About fifty to sixty dead as thirteen bodies recovered. many rescued by Hansa and Dolphin. Panic and boilers exploding intensified the disaster with no foreign passengers aboard.

Downfall of a Pastor as Drunken Incident Unfolds

In Emporia Kansas on July 23 Reverend J. J Purcet pastor of the Episcopal church was arrested at the union station for drunkenness and jailed. After sobering he expressed deep remorse claiming the ice water upset his stomach and led him to drink brandy for relief, the first alcohol he admitted consuming.

Flood Crest Reached Along Mississippi River at Keokuk

The Mississippi River height reached yesterday south of Keokuk Iowa as a flood crest. The river fell a inch and a half at Keokuk but is expected to rise further south toward Canton Quincy Le Grange and Hannibal. Debris fills the river with flotsam, including thousands of rabbits aboard logs and wreckage.

Murder Arrest Follows Milwaukee Brakeman Death

William Numsey, a man of color, was arrested at Denison Iowa for the murder of Fred Powell a Milwaukee road brakeman who was stabbed to death last Sunday. A Washington court of inquiry found no blame attached to officers or crew for the grounding of the battleship Illinois entering Christiania harbor last week.

Pope expresses satisfaction with Taft talks in Rome

In Rome on July 2, Gov Taft and party met Pope Leo XIII who praised American methods and pledged strict guidance for implementing agreed terms. The pope welcomed the talks as a step toward a lasting Vatican US accord and presented papal gifts to each Taft aide. Taft thanked the pope and urged smooth cooperation with the apostolic delegate amid press misrepresentation.
