Murder at Williston Opens Dark Inquest Mystery

The body of Peter Jarvis was found near Williston by Turney Mietener. An inquest held June 2 by coroner and a three man jury included members A.A. Austell Frank Wild and Barney Mietaner. Evidence showed Jarvis had left White Earth for Williston April 11 with two teams and goods, a woman named Alonzo Wendell accompanied him but later reported no old man had eloped. Wendell departed soon after. no further sightings. The jury found the back of the skull fractured likely by axe or stone, and returned a sealed verdict. The case casts a looming shadow over a possible crime.

Amatuer Company program at Odi Fellows Hall entertains crowd

The Wile liston Amatuer Company gave a creditable show at Odi Fellows Hall on Friday evening. Recitations by young performers and songs by Mrs Van Dyke drew praise from a large, appreciative audience. The program listed numerous pieces including the girl I left behind me and a farce Have You Sah. A tea and cake repast followed, while other notes mention wool shipments and a June meteorological summary prepared for the Graphic by Prof Daniela.

New Weather Chief Appointed by President

Willis J. Moore, formerly head of the Chicago weather bureau, was appointed on the 4th to lead the Weather Bureau, replacing Peal. The announcement came on the president's recommendation of the secretary of state, amid changes in the bureau's leadership and structure.

Ferry Boat Arrives Near Williston After Weekslong Voyage

The ferry left Benton about a month ago and has reached a point just above Ft Buford. Aiming to serve Williston, it now rests four miles upriver opposite Bergh's saw mill. The operation will start soon with stock transfers planned from counties south of here, but no exact launch date is set.

Fourth of July Quiet and Fireworks in Williston Festivities

Williston marked the Fourth with heat and quiet celebrations. A large Buford delegation visited, fireworks lit the night skies, and Hastings Quadrille Band provided music at Odd Fellows Hall. The county mourned as County Auditor Anderson was laid to rest with services led by Robert Newes. The board of Williams County issued resolutions of respect, praising Anderson as a valued official and neighbor. Local notices include iron prices, paper-hanging work, a repair shop opening, and appointments in the U S marshal and Dickinson stock groups.
