Mrs. F. M. Harvey announces the establishment of a bakery in the former Mrs. P. H. Russell restaurant building in Williston. She advertises bread pies cakes doughnuts boiled ham and other baked goods with prices and offerings including mince pies and short order lunches upon request. November 7 1896.
On Wednesday morning December 11 Harry Hayward was hanged at Minneapolis after being counseled for the murder of Catharine Alter. At the scaffold he told the sheriff his last words, Pull it tight. I stand put. His neck was not broken and after 13 minutes physicians declared him dead from strangulation.
Harry Hayward was found guilty of planning and aiding the murder of Catharine Ging to secure life insurance loans. The crime, once a major mystery, involved Blai Blaix and a seven week trial, with appeals delaying the execution date until Gov. Clough set June 21.
A state convention to promote fortifying a U.S. station in North Dakota is set for December 15 and 16 with reduced railroad rates. Executive committee members from towns across the state are listed and urged to notify how many delegates will attend. A mass meeting goal is stated to boost wealth and population, with newspapers asked to copy the notice.
Sealed bids are invited for twenty five cords of dry cottonwood. The Williston stake district office will open bids on January 1, 1896 at 7:00 pm. Wood must be thoroughly dry with no dead wood. A Christmas night ball at Odd Fellows Hall invites all to attend with standard prices. The message stresses town pride, warns against croakers who burnish pessimism, and urges tradesmen and capital to invest locally to boost enterprise and growth.
Hon Daniel F Beatty of Washington New Jersey a famed organ and piano maker ships more instruments than ever and has sold nearly 100000 since 1870. Williams County in the extreme northwest of North Dakota spans about 4500 square miles with 250 miles of Missouri River frontage. It promises rich soils, abundant timber and coal beds, cheap irrigation, and strong stock-raising ranges. The county is reportedly debt free as of July 1 1895. Williston described as a thriving town on the Great Northern line with diverse commerce and facilities.
Notice dated August 1 1809 warns regular members of White Earth to attend initiation under a new set of rules. Absence may incur a penalty of at least 15. The notice requests attendance at the stated time or face consequences.
