Merrill and Uncle Joe Parrett visited the city as Charles and Richard Becker marked their Fourth. Others include Harry Hutchins buying supplies, John Darke the White Earth GN agent at Willis ton, ex-minot banker Joe Roach on business, Buford reps E E Jones John Seel Johnny Scott, and many from nearby towns. Alex McIntosh joined Williston races, with P C Clancy heading to Fargo to oversee threshing gear. Frank Wild returned from Glasgow to spend the Fourth and keep his Great Northern post.

Williston Fourth Celebrated With Busy Race Day
Williston marked the Fourth with a first rate celebration. The day featured a large crowd, a 40 purse baseball game won 24 to 6 by Poplar, Mont. amid upbeat welcome for Captain Campbell and visitors. Afternoon races included bicycles and foot races with young and old earning cash prizes. Local development activity included Purvis acquiring town platted land and Bruegger Bros buying unsold sections, signaling growth for the western North Dakota town.

Neon’s 2d and Young Folsom placed in a quarter mile race led by Alex McAakell with Sam Brai rire from Culbertson among top finishers. Brightwood driven by Gen. W Newton won the second heat of the trotting race, making a dramatic finish in the last heat. Ming Lulu Streigel led the Indies race with Mias Vick Free second, while Billy Humphry of Culbertson won the half mile event with Frank Davis second. The day passed pleasantly with no disturbances reported.

The undersigned purchased the Townsite of Williston from the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway Company. Occupants who have not bought must remove forthwith. Those removing buildings or fences will be prosecuted. Unbought lots can be purchased within one month at appraised prices plus five dollars monthly rent from June 25, 1898. Lease rentals must be paid to Judge Emil Leonhardy for receipt and sale of lots. Trespassers may face ejectment costs. July 7, 1898.
