In Calumet Michigan on December 26 a false fire alarm caused a deadly stampede at a Christmas celebration for copper miners. Of about 700 people mostly children, 74 died, 37 girls 19 boys 18 women and 5 men, from suffocation and crush injuries as exits were blocked.
A powerful blizzard hits the northeast with wreckage along Sea Bright New Jersey beaches and widespread disruption from heavy winds and snow. No deaths reported. Injuries occur in Cleveland as a shelter house collapses. Widespread delays and downed wires affect Syracuse and Rochester streetcar and train service.

W. W. Wilde, manager of Farmers Elevator, was seriously injured Saturday night when his wagon overturned twelve miles west of town. He dislocated a shoulder, was stunned, and walked to a straw stack to keep warm. Fire kept him sheltered until morning. He reached a relative's home and Dr. Hagen treated him. he is expected to recover in days as a frightened search party looked for him.

City schools reopen Monday morning as children return to classes after two weeks of holidays. Pupils expressed eagerness to resume work. Nice weather allowed outdoor recreation, with skating a major pastime. The local skating rink yielded poor ice, forcing skaters to travel for better surface.
Benvison and bride return to their farm after a brief town visit. A house warming was held Monday for the newly married couple with guests including Mr and Mrs John Jarstad and Miss Olson, sister of the groom.
An Illinois tale recounts a stingy family that never subscribed to the town paper. A borrowed copy triggers a bee encounter, fence injury, cow death, spilled cream wrecking kittens and teeth, a broken leg, a ruined carpet, and the daughter eloping with the hired man and absconding the savings.
Up to forty thousand dollars flowed out of the state in a season through a mail order fake hog cholera serum sold by United States Specific Co of Indianapolis. Prof Ladd and others deem the product worthless, noting doctors were misled and the bottle contains water and potassium iodide. The sales hype and use directions mimicked genuine serum to attract buyers.
District court will convene here next Monday with Judge Fisk presiding. A couple of criminal cases will be tried and the civil calendar will be taken up. It is expected the work will extend two to three weeks before the calendar is cleared.
A Hoosier writer replies to J W Shaw Han of Tipton arguing about the Banana Belt and Land of Sunshine. He mocks Shaw Han’s wind hardships, recalls a tennis game on the 29th, and insists fall has been mild with Indian summer, while teasing Shaw Han’s Hoosier roots and chicken inspector gig.
The Muddy Waller Farmers Club reported a successful meeting at Palmer school and notes a future gathering at Frederick school on January 16. Pherrin items provide the meeting report.
A debate on the Single Tax will be a feature of the State Tax Association meeting to be held at Minot January 18 to 14 1914. Affirmative W H Sibbald of Minot and Negative Clyde Duffy of Minnewaukan will speak. You should hear it.
Fire in a block of stores in Montreal on Sunday afternoon overwhelmed by a water famine. About twenty buildings were destroyed as pumps waited for repaired mains. City officials expect water service to resume by Tuesday after conduit work. Churches and hospitals faced water shortages impacting services and baptism, organs, and organists, with Westmount firefighters aiding. Mr and Mrs Greengard announced wedding plans in Milwaukee with a January ceremony and a future move to International Falls Minnesota.
P Hamre announces the stock of furniture moved into his newly purchased Broadway block from W C Rawson. He rents his former building to Company E for an armory replacing Gates Hall. Hamre displays fine-fit rooms and new stock inviting elf and new customers to visit.
The 80 000 cu ft coal gas balloon carried a player piano a young society woman and a licensed aeronaut to 3000 ft then landed seven miles from start. Ballast and bags weighed 1800 lb. Dickinson not guilty verdict returned at 12 30 this morning after jurors had been out since last night. Initial ballots showed 10 to 2 for acquittal as Judge Crawford received the verdict and the defendant and wife returned to Antelope home.
The city’s fleet Christmas tree, arranged by the B and T club, drew several hundred people to the Metager lot at Main and Broadway. Cedar culled tree bright with lights and tinsel, carols by the Cho Union followed by a gift distribution to aid those in need.
Archie Seaborn aged ?, was accidentally killed in Woodworth North Dakota when he fell from an automobile. He struck his head and never regained consciousness while riding with two brothers. the accidental fall occurred as he lost his balance.
Grand Forks December 29 Mr N C MacDonald inspector of rural consolidated schools reports on Grand Forks County School Directors meeting. He notes Minnesota gains in state aid but says North Dakota has 100 more consolidated schools and 18 more consolidations this year. Ransom County leads in district consolidations.
Ed Zegan, 20, was fatally injured when thrown from a wagon eight miles northwest of Grafton as the team ran away. His brother escaped with minor bruises. The wagon pole broke. Zegan struck his head, doctors were summoned, and little hope remained. He was unmarried and well known locally.
Sam Boyd leased his east barn opposite the courthouse to Sam Boyce. A new sign marks the old place now run by the new proprietor who intends to make it one of the most popular feed barns in Williston with good service and a square deal.
The Tioga dispute Doud versus McGinnity has been appealed with the clerk sending the panels to the Supreme Court. Dowd won in district court and was awarded a judgment of seven thousand ninety eight dollars and sixty four cents.
Postmaster Metzger releases complete instructions for parcel post operation effective January 1. The 50 pound limit applies to zones 1 and 2 with reduced third through sixth zone rates and new weight allowances for books and Alaska shipments. Burleson’s figures support rate reductions. no objections noted. Parcel volume and average weight rose in zones 1 and 2 since increasing to 20 pounds.
In Bismarck North Dakota on December 26 Harry Clough, clerk in the railroad commissioner's office, checks elevators across eastern state points to ensure only licensed operations. The commission plans a statewide winter inspection to enforce licensing and bonding for elevators open to business.
Minot North Dakota December 26 city commissioners hear final reading of a lower light rate ordinance. The Consumers Power Company may appeal claiming rate changes are unjust. The new rule lowers the first 100 kWh charge from 13 to 11 cents. Devils Lake December 76 historian Libby to lecture at the Grand on Mandan and Hidatsa village life. Oldest Hidatsa village on Graham Island, near Devils Lake, is described as endangered yet the subject of preservation efforts.
