Wreck Near Wanstead Kills 28 on Grand Trunk

A head on collision between a westbound Pacific Express and a freight near Wanstead Ontario on December 20 left 28 dead and 30 injured. The wreck occurred in a blizzard as the express attempted a siding, with cars telescoping and passengers trapped for hours. Operator Andrew Carson said the order to pass Wanstead was canceled by dispatcher J G Kerr before departure, a point contested by railway officials amid an inquiry.

Sherman Strikes Rock Near San Bernardino Light

United States Army transport Sherman struck a rock near San Bernardino light south of Luzon on Friday night, causing a heavy shock and damage to plates. Twenty three inches of water filled forward bilges but was pumped out. the ship proceeded to Manila under its own power and arrived safely. Passengers remained calm and wore life preservers as crew expertly managed the incident. Cargo undamaged.

Two Children Die In Milwaukee Bed Fire From Heater

In Milwaukee on December 30, two children of Mrs. George Campbell died when bed clothing ignited from an oil heater at 225 Greenbush Street. The incident follows a note about the Campbells' husband being involved in a diving bell project linked to a Pewabic copper mine. Also reported: John Duffy and his daughter were killed at a crossing near Brodhead when struck by a train as they attempted to cross ahead of it with a sleigh and team.

Aged Germans Plotted Suicide Pact in Prison

Cincinnati reports officers uncovered a pact between two elderly Germans, Joseph Tabe and Rudolph Schaum, to kill themselves. Both men, held on a murder charge for shooting their wives, shared a cell and devised a plan using a rope from the dining room. Schaum was restrained before acting. Tabe remained under lunacy hold.

In Nelson British Columbia a snowslide struck the Meelie Gibson mine bunkhouse ten miles from Lake Kootenai killing nine men and wounding none, as rescuers found one injured man who died soon after.
