The Williston Community Club plans a Wednesday mass meeting to organize the group. Colvin B. Brown of the U S Chamber of Commerce will address the gathering, with Will E. Holbein of the Minot Merchants Association also attending. A noon luncheon precedes the event, followed by a high school girls’ dinner.
Dr H T Skovholt returned to Williston last Sunday after serving with the U S Army Medical Department in France for over a year. He left January 16 1918 for Fort Riley Kansas and sailed from New York April 30 arriving May 14 in Bordeaux. He reached the front near Chateau Thierry on June 1 with the 3rd Division Infantry as Americans advanced across the Marne River.
At the Wit tenberg Hospital annual meeting in Williston officers discussed building a new hospital here with site selection by the board of directors. If plans stay on track construction may begin this year and a new year board was elected including G. B. Metzger John Shaw Simon Westby Lars Christensen Rev A Johansen and Rev Eidbo. A report on the past year was presented. Leonhardy entertained at cards at the Leonhardy home. Hilmer Bruegger returned from Camp Lewis and resumed work at the store.
The Missouri Yellowstone Pure Breeders Association and Missouri Yellowstone Short Horn Association wrapped up their annual sale in Williston. Hundreds of stockmen attended. cattle brought high prices. Short horns averaged 198.20 a head. Herefords cows averaged 375 and bulls 305. horses sold high. U L Burdick praised the sale and invited joiners while noting the region’s transition from Indians and buffalo to white settlers and pure bred cattle.
The 164th Infantry unit of North Dakota arrived in New York yesterday aboard the President Grant from Brest France. The transport carried 4 720 soldiers including 756 wounded after a two week Atlantic voyage amid storms and rough seas. Williston reported about twelve men aboard while the regiment to be demobilized at Camp Dodge within two days.
North Dakotans residing in Southern California gathered near Los Angeles for the sixteenth annual reunion on February 15. Over 2,000 attended. W. E. Purcell and Henry G. Vick spoke. New officers named for 1919 include B. H. Harrold as president and W. White as secretary treasurer along with five vice presidents.
Robert R. Rutledge of Williston won the state chess championship at Dickinson tournament on Feb 1 and 22, tying first with Walter Calvert before Rutledge won the playoff. Rutledge previously won in 1917 and may claim permanent possession if he wins again next year. Officers elected include A Jones, L H Nichols, and Rutledge, with plans for next tournament sites.
President Wilson landed at Commonwealth Pier Boston accompanied by Mrs. Wilson and was greeted by cheering crowds. A Naval escort and guard of honor accompanied the President as he proceeded via a two mile parade route through the city. Escort details included high ranking military officials and government figures.
Word reached First National Bank of this city of the death of former bank president 0. 1 Heege who died suddenly yesterday in Minneapolis. Heege, a Minnewaukan resident, led the bank as president for five years and still owned stock. Funeral is set for his Minnewaukan home on Sunday. Norman Joe Runnin, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Runnin, died Friday of pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon with burial at Riverview Cemetery.
