In a line head-on crash near Berea Ohio a west bound passenger train and an east bound freight collided at full speed. Three mail clerks burned to death in their car and a passenger died of injuries after rescue. Engines demolished and track debris halted communications.
In Chicago four thousand locked out tailors are to return to work Thursday morning after six weeks of conflict. The special order clothing makers' union dissolves, local unions absorb into the United Garment workers with no initiation fees. Imported workers to be sent back to their cities. President Gompers of the AFL brokered the settlement.
Dr Mark Blake a Boston physician warns that about 30 000 Boston women are slaves to tea drinking with three in five women consuming tea and one in three in excess. He says the habit affects health digestion complexion and brain power and has reached high school girls in the city.
In Lake Charles on February 25 a riot erupted on the Kansas City Southern train from a saw mill town south of Leesville. A negro was shot to death and three white men were seriously injured, one possibly fatally, after intoxicated whites seized the smoker car and attacked the negro coach amid gunfire and shouting. The car was wrecked and windows shattered as the fight unfolded.
Roscoe Reynolds of Birmingham is under arrest after shooting Daniel Hussey in a revolver fight in St Louis. Reynolds, who had been singing in a concert hall, says Hussey fired first and he returned fire. Reynolds was slightly wounded in the cheek.
Knoxville Tenn February 25 Square A Buffat of a special investigating committee swore out a warrant against a Negro charging fraud in obtaining burial appropriations. The committee visited the county cemetery and exhumed coffins claimed to hold paupers. About seventy boxes reportedly contained no bodies.
Dr. Lee De Forest of New York visited Buffalo to arrange a wireless telegraph station with initial coverage over the Great Lakes. A Cleveland station will be the nearest relay, with two lake lines to serve boats this season. A Detroit Buffalo link may follow, potentially relaying through Cleveland at first.
Mrs Abram Van Howe of Sodus New York aged eighty is growing a full new set of teeth. She has never worn dentures and two weeks ago felt gum soreness where teeth had been removed years earlier. A physician confirmed a full new set pushing through both jaws.
The legislature fields bills to raise the railroad gross earnings tax from 3 to 4 percent, apply it to express lines and other carriers, and keep it separate from public improvement assessments. Other measures tax fraternal insurers, organize farmers statutes on a statewide basis, and boost damages for wrongful death from 5,000 to 15,000.
Venezuela received the Restaurador from Germany after a ceremony in Puerto Cabello with Commodore Chalbaud and German Commodore Schechter aboard. Germany’s Vineta fired a salute as the flag was lowered and the Restaurador hoisted Venezuela’s flag before transfer. Meanwhile Washington reports Bowen declined Germany’s cash-draft request, citing the protocol that £5,500 be paid in Caracas on March 16. Rebel fighting resumes near Tacarigua as Olivares’ government advances. Russia dismisses four Finnish governors while appointing Russian officials to the remaining provinces.
