A message arrived for H A Storrs of the U S Reclamation Service announcing the death of his wife at her Pomona California home. Mrs Storrs leaves two daughters Catherine and Nellie. Storrs had been visiting family in Pomona and returned to Williston when notified of her condition.
Major J. S. Murphy of Minot was convicted of third degree forgery and sentenced last week to eighteen months in the state penitentiary at Baneahseac h. He was delayed by smallpox. Attorneys asked for time to appeal to the supreme court, granted, citing alleged judge Pollock jury room visits without counsel.
Father Vaughan delivered a lecture titled Sermons from Shakespeare last Thursday evening to a large and attentive audience. The event drew many residents who applauded after the talk and praised the speaker's insights.
Senator Hansbrough secured passage of a measure granting a winter leave of absence for homestead entrymen. The act allows nonresidence during December through March without canceling entries or final proofs, while retaining residence duties outside those months.
Minot North Dakota February 16. Receiver Swords filed papers in a case against H J Haskamp former bank president of St Cloud Minnesota seeking recovery of a quarter section of land four miles south of Minot fraudulently taken from the bank's assets. The case suggests further developments in the defunct bank affairs and hopes to satisfy depositors and creditors.
Oleson and Anderson hardware dealers plus T A Stennehjem of Mayville acquire the Chase and Dwyer property housing a pool hall. They plan mid March possession, move stock to new quarters with 110 foot front, remodel building, rent upstairs rooms, and set $4500 price through Williston Land Co and Albert Dwyer.
Williston officials report efforts to persuade the president to modify the January 25 order on five year homesteads. Secretary Hitchcock remains firm, while Senator Hansbrough and Representatives Marshall and Grenna describe partial success and details on special agents and commuting practices.
