The cold spell prompts talk of a Williston skating rink for youth after drownings in nearby towns. Authorities suggest flooding city lots to create safe, flood-formed basins that will hold when frozen, learning from past failures where water soaked in before freezing.
Dean C H Crouch of the University will address the American Society of Engineers on North Dakota lignite experiments in steam and producer plants. He gathered data from university winter tests and presents the paper by special request. The dean predicts broader interest and future inquiries from other regions seeking lignite.
Thomas Allen, charged with shooting and dangerously wounding Brownie Emery about ten days ago, was bound over to district court on 15 000 bond to answer shooting with intent to kill. He remains jailed in McKenzie county pending the June district court term after hearing before Justice Foreman. Attorney A J Bessie of Williston appeared for the defendant.
The October report from Dr. John Grassick, Secretary of the state Board of Health, notes 722 births and 197 deaths in North Dakota. Ward County reports a smallpox outbreak with no fatalities. seven tuberculosis cases with no deaths. The data dispute claims that North Dakota is the health leader.
Mr. Chas. Seibert of Detroit II arrives to stay and take charge of the Seibert Barber shop when J. O. Seibert assumes duties as Clerk of court-elect at the courthouse.
Minneapolis reports a federal raid led by Marshal Grimshaw arrests sixteen news dealers and druggists for alleged illegal traffic in Jim Jam Jema in Bismarck North Carolina. All plead not guilty and are released on 560 bond. Federal hearing set for early April.
Two Sidney businessmen J W Morrison and J A Ferris arrived for Thanksgiving to aid the search for Samuelson who vanished weeks ago. They checked in Minot after learning a body found in the Des Lacs reservoir was not Samuelson, noting Samuelson had only about 35 dollars for travel. They found no sign of foul play and reported Samuelson financially secure with funds in the Sidney bank.
The Federated Council of the Churches of Christ in America gathers in Chicago to coordinate outreach to the unchurched and reduce overlapping efforts. North Dakota delegates Dr. W. H. Matthews and Dr. Homer M. Cook head the state commission, with W. H. White named by the Fargo Methodist church as bishop delegate.
Rev Shaw delivered the opening sermon in a Home series at the Congregational Church using his childhood home to evoke home scenes and urge shaping homes for future generations. The next talk titled The Husband and Father and The Wife and Mother in the Home is set for Sunday Evening December 15.

Edwin A. Palmer of Palmer Craven Burns, a prominent Williston law firm, was in Bismarck on legal business. The veteran journalist turned lawyer ten years ago and has found abundant prosperity, much to the delight of his old newspaper friends.
The Donnybrook Courier notes that Williston papers are among the cleanest and best in the state, having carried heavy advertising for two weeks, effectively running two sections.
The State Library Commission at Bismarck loaning a six month traveling library of books in Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages. If community interest proves strong, a permanent set may be purchased. Titles include Nordvestpassagen, Norske Folkeeventyr, Norske klassikere, Holberg Komedier, and works by Hamsun, Lagerlof, Welhaven, and others.
The November report shows North Dakota fared well with 7 clear days 18 partly cloudy and 5 cloudy. Temperature ranged from 12 to 67 degrees with a 31 degree daily spread and .14 inches of precipitation 1.0 inch of snowfall and no snow on the ground at month end. Southwest winds averaged 6.9 mph with a 40 mph five minute peak on the 22nd.
Paul M. Kilroy arrested near Tioga on a $75 cash robbery charge confessed to the crime and was sentenced to one year in the state prison. He worked a threshing rig, entered others clothes at night, and was sent to begin his term Tuesday. Dear Editor letter from Frank Hollett thanks Spring Coulee and Garden Valley friends who donated funds and a new suit for Christmas.
The report lists national totals with Wilson at 6 156 743 votes Roosevelt 3 928 140 Taft 3 376 422 and Debs 673 783 with socialists incomplete in seven states. compares to 1908 Bryan 6 393 182 and Taft 7 637 676 votes.
Ambrose Tribune reports Divide County commissioners faced a stuck canvass as only one member could act with others running for office. Colgan and Noonan could not agree on a third. a lot was drawn selecting Davis who could not enter the courthouse amid Crosby mob action. A mandamus forced Auditor Vadnais to appear and Judge Leighton upheld it ordering County Judge Pierce to participate. Ambrose vows to contest the election.
The second annual dancing party by the Episcopal church will be held Friday December 18 at Gates Hall starting 9 o clock. An old fashioned country lunch will feature doughnuts cider apples coffee and sandwiches cake and cookies. All are invited to attend for a evening of genuine enjoyment.
Mrs Herman Schafer Mrs John Shaw Mrs Charles Mackenroth and Mrs George Leonhardy welcomed about 45 guests for an afternoon of grand-nola and dominoes with red and white decorations, red carnations, and Orpheum orchestra providing music. Mrs TE Carney received red carnations for high grand-nola score and Mrs Borsheim and Lampman won dominoes. A luncheon followed.
Slush ice last week carried away about 300 feet of the temporary bridge over the river near Mondak including the steel span built by A Guthrie & Co. A large night crew used seminy 1,000 pounds of dynamite to break up lodged ice. The bridge, constructed for rail material movement from the main line of the Great Northern into McKenzie county, had been in use about three weeks. Repair work will start when the river freezes again.
The Williston Choral Union held its first winter rehearsal at the Library Auditorium with forty two active members. The group praised the chorus of Gounod s Gullia and ordered more copies to expand membership. Future rehearsals will include Sullivan s Lost Chord arranged for four voices and Mendelssohn s Hymn of Praise I Waited for the Lord as copies arrive. Members can join via the committee: Mrs Edwin Falmer Miss Macdonald Mr Forster Miss Baldwin or Prof Onstad.
Reliable reports indicate within the next year the J I Case Company will construct a large shop and warehouse near their present site. Last year the firm moved substantial threshing and farm machinery through the area and shipped over fifty carloads to Williston, underscoring the need for expanded facilities. Also announced is a winter entertain ment event titled A 17th Century Murder Case at Library Hall on Friday December 6 at 8 30. Admission 25 or 35 cents.
James M. Corcoran a farmer from northern McKensie County was found dead near Wilbur post office last Friday afternoon. Cause of death appears to be heart failure. he was about 56 and was placing a roll of roofing paper in his buggy when he was stricken.
Young students from six years old up performed a splendid program at the Library Auditorium on Friday evening November 22. Parents and friends attended as twenty numbers showcased careful musical training and were well received.
