Tioga High School Tigers travel to Bryant Field Friday night for their first conference football game of the season at 8 p m. The Tigers, who have split two games this season 1 in 2 with Leonard and Honey Grove seek their first league win.
Whitewright Post 7111 leads a veterans' drive announcing the VFW New Year starting October 1. The group touts $120,000,000 in benefits and about 150,000 adjudicated claims by August 1948 with many interviews.
A Cub Scout pack meeting will be held in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church tonight at 7 30. Chancy Corse district scout executive from Sherman will attend and show a moving picture on Cub Scouting. Parents of boys aged 9 to 12 are urged to attend and others interested in boys are invited.
Austin announces October welfare checks will rise about $2 for needy aged blind and dependent children. Director John H. Winters says the increase comes from a new federal state sharing formula of 64 percent federal 36 percent state. The plan prevents a $2 to $3 reduction next month due to dwindling welfare funds.
Bridgeton New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Brannan accuses Thomas E. Dewey of double talk on farm price supports. Dewey says he approves of them while Brannan charges him with attacks from fellow Republicans and insincere city rhetoric.
Clarence Blasingame of Dallas describes his ordeal after being struck by lightning near his home two weeks earlier. The blow knocked him senseless burned him in several places tore his clothes and left him with a broken jaw requiring extensive bandages and splints.
Up to Thursday morning White Wright gins reported 876 bales of cotton received, compared with 1210 bales a year ago and 965 bales two years back. Cotton sold at 30 cents, seed at 65 dollars per ton, and corn prices stood at 1.15 for yellow and 1.30 for white. Prices show a week earlier seed was 100 dollars per ton and cotton 30 cents.
President Truman drew crowds of about 3 000 at Bells and more than 25 000 at Bonham on Monday evening. He spoke thirty minutes at Bonham football stadium and briefly in Bells with locals from Whitewright in attendance. A reception followed at Congressman Sam Rayburn's home with many notables present.
A Tuesday blaze at the Ida gin owned by Farley and Sadler destroyed a warehouse with about 1000 bushels of corn and spread to cotton burrs. Firefighters saved the burr pile and a barn on Mrs. A. H. Fortner’s farm, where 900 bushels of corn and a separator were stored. Insured loss reported but not fully covered.

Grayson County commissioners approve 22.2 miles of new state designation for secondary roads under the 1948 plan. Routes include Denison to Denison Dam on 2.4 miles, Whitesboro to Gordonville 13.1 miles, Van Alstyne to Cannon 5.2 miles, and Dorchester to State Highway 289 1.5 miles. Judge J. N. Grayson County adopts a 95 cent per $100 valuation tax rate for 1948 including a nine cent levy to fund $750,000 in road bonds. The old rate was kept by lowering the jury levy and adjusting bond levies. no airport bond levy needed as bonds retire this year. Valuations total $44,738,040 with real property $29,348,620 and personal $15,389,420. Tax statements expected between October 10 and 15.
At a Preston Everheart Post meeting the American Legion ratified buying the Canaan school building for 1276 dollars, with moving contracted this week to the Legion park. The 30 by 58 foot frame structure will be upgraded, possibly expanded, and placed at the park’s north end. Whitewright will build a Sears street crossing and improve the street near Cotton Belt depot. The Legion plans to furnish and modernize the structure and improve the park with playground equipment for all ages.
Grayson County reports five rigs active north of Sherman with two new wells completed last week. The Sally K. Strickland No. 1 at 4343 feet and the May Buckner No. 2 at 4362 feet are productive, bringing county total to 23 wells. The Buckner site lies two miles north of Sherman. The Mary Owens No. 1 was declared a dry hole at 4428 feet, located just north of Buckner. The Covey Bates No. 1 discovery well is being deepened by Standard after finaling in 1947 at 3789 feet, with pumping aid later required.

Alexander M. McColl, age 14, attends his first Harvard class in Cambridge with his 17 year old brother Archibald. The Kalamazoo and German town, Pennsylvania based pair were inspired by a mother Bryn Mawr graduate and Penn Charter School headmaster guidance. McColl plans to study law after graduation in 1952.
