County Demonstration Agent C C Morris attended a Rose Hill meeting to arrange exhibits for the Red River Valley Fair. He reports enthusiasm and plans for product displays including needlework by several ladies. Morris also visited Bethel Plot Grove and other communities in support of the fair.
An Oklahoma mule buyer purchased two car loads for the Government with Hampton & Sears supplying part of the shipment and other mules sourced from around Tom Bean. The mules were shipped to Oklahoma City on Friday. A revival meeting begun last Sunday continues at Pilot Grove led by Rev. Tom Rockett.
W. C. Brinlee the Westminster city marshal shot J. B. Hughes of Rofs Oklahoma in Dallas at Main and Central streets around ten last Saturday night. Brinlee said Hughes and his nephew trailed him after prior arrests and dragged him from his car. He claimed Hughes threatened him with a knife, prompting the fatal shot to save his life.
An accident to the boiler at the light plant caused a brief blackout Thursday night. Repairs were completed quickly and current restored with little inconvenience to patrons.
The Denison exemption board for the north half of Grayson county and including Whitewright issues a call for 200 more registrants to appear for examination today the 28th. The board cites many registrants already entering service and delays at the Tyler District Board as reasons for the additional call. Whitewright residents notified include Claud W. Phillips Otto P. A Colorado Record column observes caravans of displaced families moving east after drought and failed farming efforts. It notes undernourished livestock, lost possessions, and hopeful but broken plans to settle west, urging resilience and eventual return when rains restore prosperity.
Cecil Smith of the exemption board spoke to 98 young men bound for the National Army in San Antonio. He praised their cheerful response, warned against alcohol, and urged discipline and hard work to earn promotion and honor as veterans of the German war.
The Baptist Missionary Association of Grayson County held its annual meeting at Hove with forty churches reporting on last year’s work. Total contributions totaled 8,132.24 for Home and Foreign Mission, 1,797.70 for Christian Education, 1,190.48 for Buckner Orphans Home, 280.70 for Ministers Relief, and 224.65 for Baptist Sanitarium. Rev. J L Truett was reelected clerk. Next meeting set for Antioch in September.
A man entered T. E. Harber's Jameson store and presented a forged $6.00 check signed by R. M. Cannon of the city. Mrs. Harber cashed it in the absence of Mr. Harber, and the forgery was obvious when the check was presented at the bank the next day.
Bob Sears reports a small shipment of automobile registration numbers from the State Highway Department. The cards show proper numbers, and owners presenting them will obtain the corresponding license plates. The batch includes 48,179 to 48,190.
