Senior class hosts bake sale at Hasty Chevrolet and moves to the city election room with greeting cards to fund the senior trip. The Ladonia News editor Joe Morrow and family visit, Wolfe City football aims to break a jinx against Whitewright on Oct. 15.
Howard Logan chaired a Friday afternoon session at Henry Hynds farm west of Van Alstyne with about 100 attendees from Whitewright. The discussion covered seedbed preparation and seeding windows for winter legumes like vetch and winter peas, benefits to soil, and cooperative grower success stories.
By Thursday morning the Whitewright gins had ginned 1256 bales of cotton with 950 bales at Donigan Gin and 306 at Whitewright Gin. The Whitewright Gin started late due to remodeling delays. Prices: Donigan 34 cents per pound, Whitewright 33 to 35.55 cents by grade, seed at 70 dollars per ton. Opening prices were 33.50 for cotton and 68 for seed.
The PTA welcomed 125 attendees for the opening meeting in the gym Tuesday at 7 30 led by Rev. Lee Smith. The treasurer reported 17.50 remaining from last season and a motion to thank Rev. Tildon McFerrin passed.
Whitewright Tigers seek a third straight win as they travel to Leonard Friday after securing victories over Commerce 12 6 and Bells 54 12. They recall defeating Leonard 45 6 last year and aim to attract a large Whitewright fan turnout. The team has one non conference game at Rockwall before a six game conference slate starting October 8 at Whitesboro October 15 Wolfe City October 22 Honey Grove October 29 Van Alstyne November 5 Cooper November 12 Farmersville.
The seventh and eighth grade junior football team announces opening game next Thursday September 30 at Van Alstyne with a home game on October 14. Admission is free and spectators are asked to bring a bar of soap for showers if available. Coaches are David Johnson and G. F. Bass.
McKinney says a three day rodeo starts Friday with performances across Friday Saturday and Sunday preceding the Collin County Fair which runs Sept 29 through Oct 2. Jointly sponsored by the Collin County Fair Association and Collin County Saddle Association the fair features livestock and horse shows exhibits and a carnival. The Collin County Livestock Association will provide premiums to fair winners.
Dr. Alton Oschner told the Southwestern Surgical Congress that filter cigarets do not prevent cancer and merely boost sales. He warned of rising lung cancer from cigaret use, predicting one in ten men could develop the disease in 15 years. He cited tobacco tar and nicotine as linked health risks.
Pottsboro citizens plan a 6 30 pm departure from Lingo Leeper Lumber Co to Savoy to support its fire truck fund with a fundraising barbecue. Fire Chief Fred Lannom says most volunteers will join, stating the more the merrier as neighbors help. Trucks account for 12 percent of total mileages among transport modes.
W C McCord was named industrial engineer for Lone Star Gas in the Greenville division succeeding Edward M St John who becomes Sherman district manager McCord will advise on gas use in commercial and industrial plants and assist builders with gas air conditioning and large heating units His territory covers over 100 towns including Whitewright and he will be based in Greenville He is a San Antonio native a Woodrow Wilson High School Dallas graduate and Texas A M College mechanical engineering degree holder He began with Lone Star in Greenville in 1949 then moved to Sherman before this October 1 appointment
S. M. Langford, 96, longtime Tom Bean resident and Alabama native, died last Thursday in a Sherman hospital after illness. Funeral 4 p.m. Saturday at Tom Bean Church of Christ. Burial in White Mound Cemetery. Survivors include two sons Ben and Otto, two daughters Alma and Ola, 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and siblings in Algood Tennessee.
Lee M Williams 69 died in a Gainesville hospital Thursday and was buried there Friday. Survived by wife Bernie Sears Williams three daughters Louise Williams Dan Cleveland and J A Hulme one son Robert Williams a brother Jim Williams and a sister Mrs John Norris four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was born at Bells Texas and married Bernie Sears in 1905. They had lived in Gainesville for 48 years.
Funeral services were held at 2 30 p m Tuesday at the Tom Bean Methodist Church for Mrs Lizzie Lee Pennell 69 of Tom Bean who died Sunday in a Sherman hospital The service was led by Rev H P Williams and Rev Lee H Smith Burial followed at Wittitoe Cemetery Pallbearers included Norman Hinson Earl Lewis Hollis Scoggins Maurice Pennell Ray Key C H Lackey E O Thomas and Spurgeon Teague She was born March 9 1885 in Alabama and lived in Grayson County 54 years She was married to the late A L Pennell Surviving are four sisters and a brother The note adds West Point is the oldest U S military post now in service.
Whitewright property owners approved a $25 000 street improvement bond issue. The Attorney General signed off and the State Comptroller cleared delivery to purchasers. Cash is deposited at First National Bank. Interest 3 percent with 5000 due in 1971 and a 10 year redemption option. Principal and interest funded by a local tax levy on property valued at 1 049 160. First tasks include patching old blacktop before new asphalt and rock surface.
The 1954 World Series is expected to yield the richest gate in history. Each winning team member could receive about 10,000 as personal earnings. The Polo Grounds seats 55,000 and Municipal Stadium 73,500 with ticket prices at an all time high. The Series opens September 29.
Governor Shivers learned the 60 cent federal subsidy on feed grains for stockmen in drouth counties will rise to one dollar per hundredweight. The move follows recommendations by Shivers and state officials to the U S Department of Agriculture. Six more Texas counties were named for drought relief, bringing the total to 104. new counties include Bowie Cass Henderson Red River Titus and Van Zandt.
Dr William S Reveno of Detroit cites widespread abuse of hospitalization plans including elderly patients kept in hospital for convenience. He chairs the Michigan hospital advisory committee conducting a survey with the State Medical Association. The study links overstay or unnecessary hospital stays to higher premiums for healthy policyholders.
A Texas insurance official warned residents to keep clear of flames this winter after 464 Texans were burned to death last year from clothing ignited by close contact with fires. Norris W. Parker of the Texas Insurance Advisory Association urged two exits per bedroom and never leaving children or the elderly alone at home.
The State Health Department mobile chest X-ray unit will be in Whitewright for a day and a half on November 9 and 10. The event is co sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and various civic groups and will be held at Hasty Chevrolet Company showroom. Hours are 12 noon to 5 30 on the 9th and 8 30 to 5 30 on the 10th. Previous years drew over a thousand and 873 X rays respectively. sponsors aim to top the thousand again.
President Eisenhower is expected to ask Congress to revise selected personal and business tax rates next year. Proposals under review would aid retirement and foreign income, with possible changes to capital gains, cooperatives, tax-exempt groups, and depletion allowances in oil and mining. An across-the-board income tax cut is unlikely until the budget improves. The administration projects a large deficit and an eventual raise in the debt ceiling from $275 to $281 billion.
The U S Department of Agriculture reports October plentiful foods with beef and cheddar cheese at high stocks. Slaughter notes slaughter ahead of last year and prices may stay attractive. many foods show increased stocks including broilers milk eggs and oils. New to October are shrimp and frozen haddock.
