President Harding vetoed the soldiers bonus bill saying he supports the purpose but opposes its provisions. He cited financing, higher taxes, and worsening national debt as reasons. House and Senate leadership prepared votes. lawmakers gauged support before proceeding amid a possible veto override.
Washington report notes the soldiers' bonus bill failed to reach a two-thirds Senate majority with a 44 to 28 vote after the House had passed the measure over the President's veto 258 to 54. The tally left the bill four votes short of the required two-thirds, ending the bid for the policy today.
Sherman Texas Sept 16 Lee Anderson and R G Mallear both of Denison were found not guilty of open port violation by a six to six deadlocked jury in the first such Texas case. Ed Smith and Murray Marlowe must stand trial again as jurors failed to agree. Mallear faces a new charge of assault to murder for wounding Katy coach cleaner J W Pike during the same incident.
W. M. Harrod, a farmer southeast of Denison, was acquitted by instructed verdict in the Fifteenth District Court at Sherman on a murder charge. Insufficient evidence led to the verdict after testimony that Harrod allegedly cut Jacok McCoy with a knife on a trestle after a prior dispute, with McCoy dying in Denison two days later.
Whitewright high school football enters full practice as 20 players report and aim to beat Honey Grove on September 29. Coach staff, aided by Max Powell, push hard training for a hard schedule likely to test the team. Students urged to boost morale and support to raise the school's standing.

Red River Valley Fair opens Tuesday at 10 AM in Sherman with a parade led by the Sherman Chamber of Commerce. Prizes total $500 or more for exhibits and floats including $100 for best decorated private automobile. Memphis Tenn September 18 J Cohen editor of a labor newspaper was sentenced to six months in the county jail and a $1000 fine by Judge J W Ross in U S District Court for contempt based on an editorial that called strikebreakers scabs and scavengers. He was released on a $5000 bond pending appeal.
J Doug Morgans tent show arrives Monday Sept 25 and plays all week on the Sears lot South Bend street. Two private cars will reach Whitewright early Monday. Repertoire includes Charlie Harrison pieces such as Mr Jim Bailey the Oil King with many specialties. Tickets affordable with ladies free Monday under usual condition.
M L Bateman and L V Smith were Denton visitors Friday. Bateman is the new owner of the Whitewright Milling Company from Spokane Washington and an experienced mill man who is understood to plan putting the mill into operation soon.
The First Baptist Church closed its revival last Sunday night and added twenty new members. Evangelist Solomon led the two week event with Rev E D Solomon, Mr and Mrs Armstrong, and Mrs Hendricks. Armstrongs led song services and Hendricks played piano. A Monday musical program at Whitewright drew a large audience before the party departed Tuesday for Ennis.
Whitewright's local cotton yard had received 2,470 bales by Wednesday night, 1,459 more than last season. Gins were not as crowded as last week but averaged about 100 bales daily. Seed cotton brought 7.50 to 7.60 per hundred, lint sold from 20.25 to 20.60, and stood around 20.75 Thursday morning.
Walter Myrick, learning to drive with R H May, misapplies the accelerator near a bridge west of Ida. The car careens toward a twenty foot embankment, hits a tree, stops after a radiator smash, while May loses his trousers leaping a barbed wire fence. both reach Sherman for repairs and Myrick plans another trial.
On advice of the city health officer Dr C P Johnson one section each of the first and second grades at the grammar school were dismissed from Wednesday to Monday morning. One student in each grade has diphtheria and exposed the rooms. Exposed students cannot be carriers for days, and since they are out, no further danger is posed. Reentry Monday will involve physician examination at the school building. Parents aided, no further cases expected, says Superintendent H L Durham.
Grayson County tax assessment rolls approved by the County Commissioners and turned over to Tax Collector Johnson. The Sun lists totals: Acres in county 611213. value 15568865. City values Sherman and Denison 14532110. Personal property 10530235. Total county values 48376852. State tax money 362825. County tax money 266072. All good roads money 79802. Rural schools money 97377. Depreciation in taxable values this year over last about two million dollars due to livestock and merchandise.
The Red River Valley Fair boosters with Sherman Municipal Band visited Wednesday to promote the fair. They announced the fair starts in Sherman next Tuesday and will be better than ever with $3,000 in cash premiums offered by the Red River Valley Fair Association.
St Louis report says the Missouri Kansas and Texas railroad sale under receivership, scheduled for tomorrow and the next two days, has been postponed to the first week of October to allow time to arrange several details.
The Black Cat Tea Room and Gift Shop opened in Whitewright with a reception for citizens. The shop, run by Mrs. Gilmore Webster and Miss Inez Ray, features a black and orange interior and offers gifts, novelties, light lunches, and afternoon tea.
Sherman City Commission on Monday let a contract to paint the standpipe inside with two coats. They recall Whitewright’s standpipe job and warn it may smell as paint cures, since it had not been painted in eighteen years, causing concern among residents about foul odors after water was turned in.

Whitewright public schools report a strong first day with higher overall enrollment than last year. High school students include fifty from Collin Fannin and Grayson counties, total high school enrollment at 150, plus transfer students from other districts. Vocational subjects expand in both grammar and high school, with agriculture, sewing, cooking, animal husbandry, and junior Spanish. A stock judging team will compete in Fort Worth and Atlanta trip prizes are offered. Free transfer enrollment begins January 15.
Superintendent and Mrs. H. L. Durhament entertained the Whitewright school faculty Tuesday evening at their home. The gathering featured enjoyable games and refreshments.
