The Rotary Club sponsored scrap metal collection continues through next Monday after poor turnout. Residents are urged to gather hidden piles and drop them off, with metal to be sold to a junk dealer and proceeds added to Whitewright's war fund. Glen Earnheart and Rev. E. P. Wootten are points of contact for locations.
Whitewright gins have processed 497 bales of cotton through Wednesday night, below last year and well under 1940 figures. Rain and heavy dews slowed picking, while farmers expect larger yields but need dry weather to speed ginning and harvest. Cotton prices hold at 17.50 per bale with seed around 45 dollars a ton, higher than two years ago.
Texas mothers and fathers voice anxieties to congressmen over plans to draft 18 and 19 year old boys for the Army. Letters express protest and concern about military necessity and whether older men should be drafted first, as lawmakers weigh department recommendations and army size before deciding post election.
Supt. E C Butler announced football practice for Whitewright High Tigers will begin Monday at 4 pm, with J H Murphy named as English teacher and Tigers coach. Murphy comes from Anna and holds a BS from East Texas State Teachers College. Mrs. Henrietta Roberts Goodwin will teach first grade at the Grammar School, holding a BA from Texas State College for Women. One science vacancy remains. overall enrollment expected near last year due to fewer town residents.
Charles Romick chairing the Dallas County Selective Service advisory board asks Congress to raise the draft age from 45 to 55 to bolster noncombatant Army branches. He notes 10 percent of troops are front line and urges volunteers, especially ex servicemen, to fill roles via the higher age limit.
Washington announces revised terms for Treasury Tax Saving Notes to aid taxpayers with new Series A-1945 and C-1945, replacing 1944 series withdrawn Sept 12 1942. New notes offer cash redemption with interest and flexibility for tax reserves and idle funds mobilization for wartime efforts. Also notes rising July cement production and shipments by 36.9 and 44.9 percent respectively.
Of the 167,934,720 acres comprising Texas total land area 137,683,372 acres lie in farms. The figure highlights extensive agricultural use across the state with farm land dominating property distribution.
The plan outlines the rationing process for Texas motorists. On designated days they apply for an A book with 48 coupons and a windshield sticker. A books cap four gallon coupons. B books add 16 coupons for three months. C books for doctors and others add 96 coupons for three months. S cards allow unlimited gas with S1 or S2 books.
Selective service registrants classed 1-B due to venereal disease will be inducted starting Oct 1. They will receive treatment and cure before duty. Inductions of venereal cases begin at 2 percent of total inductions and rise to a higher rate within months, says Major Gen. Lewis B. Hershey.
Private Delbert Jenkins of San Francisco, 61, father of eight, joins the Army at Fort Leonard Wood after serving in the last war. He bypassed a commission, works as assistant to the tools supply sergeant, and says this time the aim is to destroy the German military machine. Livestock raising is noted as a Texas white man’s first industry.

Twenty one girls in Miss Eva Williams' High School homemaking class completed summer projects earning one half credit toward graduation while 23 total hours totaled 2 442 for the group. Projects included kitchens and bedrooms, furniture refinishing and making, clothing storage, meals, and various canning and sewing tasks. Open house at the High School featured a handmade guest book and zol decorations.
Donald M. Nelson named William M. Jeffers president of Union Pacific as rubber administrator with full authority to execute the Baruch committee six point plan. Jeffers will coordinate and expand the synthetic rubber program while enforcing measures to conserve rubber stocks and expand civilian tire supply. Jeffers, a longtime Union Pacific executive born in 1876, was chosen after Roosevelt backed Baruch recommendations.
The Texas Railroad Commission received testimony on Dixie Motor Coach Corporation for temporary and permanent permits to run a Denison to Greenville route via Bells Whitewright Blue Ridge Farmersville and Floyd. Mooney Motor Coach withdrew its protest after agreeing on passenger traffic and schedules. The new service aims to have Denison arrivals before 8 am and departures after 5 pm to assist Whitewright and Bells workers.
President Roosevelt warned that if public cooperation in the scrap collection drive does not improve, the government may seize metal from owners. He noted excess scrap exists in homes and farms and that the White House has already contributed five tons in three months.
The Roosevelt Independent party nominates Charles Lavergne Sommerville of Dallas for U S Senate in November. He will face Democratic nominee W Lee O Daniel. Sommerville left the Democratic primary to form the new party. Other nominees include George W Akard of San Antonio for lieutenant governor Patrick A Flenniken of Waco for attorney general and Thomas Nye Ballard of Wichita Falls for railroad commissioner.
Secretary Wickard ordered rationing of new farm machinery to control distribution and maximize contribution to the food for freedom program. The measure takes effect Thursday and covers remaining 1942 sales with a later plan for 1943.
