Greg Sanderson reports the Whitewright Ramblers will host the second Sun day Sing Song at Whitewright Nursing Home on September 14 starting at 2 p.m. The event invites community participation and features local performers and residents.
Mrs. Lucille Sherer of Leonard and Mrs. Dorothy Crowder of Irving visited Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Bennett on Saturday. The Bennetts joined Bill Bennett at home as he recovers from a combine accident. Grayson Home Economists met at Community Public Service with Annette Snider as hostess. Brenda Wilson Linda Sullivan Virginia McFatridge and Sue Brinkley attended a news reporting meeting at Lone Star Gas sponsored by the Sherman Democrat last week.
The Class of 1950 invites everyone to visit their room for punch and cookies on September 13 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. and again 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Look for Room Number in Lobby to honor teachers, parents and friends.
Whitewright and Van Alstyne singers performed an old fashioned gospel program Sunday at the V A Center in Bonham. Participants from Whitewright included Lucille Ingram Clyde Grover Vera Chesser Owen Johnson Edith Johnson Greg Sanderson J L Clark and Pearl Howe. Linda Sullivan and Priscille Riker attended a Free Enterprise forum at Sid Richardson Hall on the campus of Austin College. Mark Shepherd of Texas Instruments presented the program. Gayle Clark urges Whitewright PTO family participation with a $10 prize for the home room with the most joining forms were distributed to students and can be joined by calling Mrs Clark for more information.
Whitewright City Council met in regular session to open bids on a city owned house. Ricky Tillett of Tom Bean bid the winning $4,000 and will take possession after the Buck Kidd family vacates within 45 days. The Kidds plan to move to Rudolph Phillips’s property across from the post office. Mayor Dick Walker announced Leon Scott’s resignation from the council due to a transfer to Normangee. A vacancy will not be filled now, and the next agenda includes a meeting with Lone Star Gas officials.
A revival meeting is set from Sept 14 to Sept 21 at Enterprise Baptist Church located 3% miles east of Newright. The Rev. Hugh Davis of Georgetown Baptist Church will deliver the nightly message at 7 30 PM. Everyone is welcome.
Hundreds of former students and residents return for Whitewright’s inaugural homecoming. Event features registrations at 9 am, a 1 pm meeting, hospitality rooms, a welcome by officials, and a football game versus Tom Bean at Tiger Stadium. Catered barbecue, coffee hours, and private afterparties planned.
Old school records were searched for names of ex-students. Volunteers from the Grayson County area worked to obtain addresses. Heading the steering committee has been Betty Rich Bodine Laverne Kilgree Darwin and Barbara Hasty Hughes all of Whitewright C B Bryant III of Bonham Betty Jones Price of Savoy and Joan Huseman Ball of Sherman.
Whitewright High School Tigers beat Farmersville 12 6 in a season opener. QB Steve Hodge threw for 158 yards on 15 of 32 with two touchdowns, one to Danny Henderson, and Gary Tillett added the late score. Tigers’ defense and receivers received praise, and preparations turn to Tom Bean fracas.
Tom Bean, home of the Tomcats, seeks revenge on Whitewright as they chase the 1975 District 8-B East title. With 17 returning starters and six all-district beacons, Eddie Lang leads a senior heavy lineup including Cravens Hollensed Boff and Yowell. Whitewright hosts a rival showdown amid a slate of Friday night scores.
Whitewright residents attended Monday noon meeting led by acting president Danny Berend. Reports covered secretary Edith Jester and treasurer Charles Truksa, and updates on Bi Centennial maps, flag project, park benches, and welcome signs. Christmas parade date eyed Dec 6 while Nov 29 considered too early. slogans invited for civic sign contest.
Continental Telephone Co promotes Leon Scott, an installer repairman since 1973, to Facility Supervisor in Normangee. He will oversee eleven exchanges including Normangee Buffalo Bedias Centerville Donie Franklin Hilltop Lakes Iola Leona Marquez and North Zulch with five installers under him. Scott is a 1963 Whitewright High School and 1968 ETSU graduate and has served as Whitewright city councilman. His duties start in Normangee August 21 as his wife Diana and children Lana and Roger plan to join once housing is secured.
Braniff International pilot Carl Rowland spoke to the Whitewright Rotary Club detailing aviation advances since 1940. He compared DC-3 service with 21 passengers to modern jets carrying 165 passengers at 600 mph, noted safety training and operations, and described South American routes from Buenos Aires to JFK with fuel figures. He predicted future transport changes as energy constraints and wars affect aviation.
As of Friday, 172 area retired citizens had registered for classes in the Grayson County College Senior Avocational-Vocational Education program. Late enrollment will continue until Thursday, said Dr. A. E. Shearer, SAVE director. Senior citizens may select from a variety of courses and activities, including first aid, watercolor painting, Spanish, literature, piano, politics, personal business procedures, crafts, speed reading, cosmetology, plant maintenance and landscaping, geography, bridge, golf, dominoes, square dancing, shuffleboard, horsehoes and tennis.
Lt. Col. and Mrs. Charles Douglas Herrera with children Kenneth and Lynn conclude a visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bassett and head to Seoul for a two year tour. Herrera will serve as Provost Marshal of the 8th Army headquartered in Seoul.
David Buddy Little of Whitewright returned from a Botswana safari amid trophy kills. He partnered in a Dallas real estate firm, and the trip included a record book lion of unusual size and a cape buffalo. He described grueling days, nights in tin-roof huts, and a 16 pound weight loss.
