Fall hints in the air as overcast skies greet readers. Suburban notes recount visits, reminders of hometown memories, and corrections of local coaches names. Pancake supper at the Methodist church before Friday night’s homecoming and rain totals reported by John Curtis anchor this community page.
Dr. Steve Sullivan was elected mayor pro-tem at a city council meeting to cover duties while Mayor Dick Walker recovers from surgery at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Walker’s hospital stay length is currently unknown.
Whitewright students observe Homecoming Friday with an 8 p.m. kickoff against Princeton Panthers. Crowning of the Football Sweetheart at halftime highlights the event. Senior drill team members and cheerleaders Molly Floyd, Debbie Whipple, Janna Worsham, Trena Jarvis, Tammy Norris, and Wanda Hastings are candidates.
Whitewright Public Library joins the Northeast Texas Library System along with Van Zandt county Public Library in Canton and Franklin county Public Library in Mount Vernon. The move, aided by space in a new city hall and local support, adds to 50 member libraries and enables interlibrary loan, 16 mm film access, books by mail, and a microfilm catalog across 18 libraries. Mayor Dick Walker and city officials helped arrange space for a 10,000 volume library, with annual funding of 2,500 toward a 5,000 budget, under library board chair Kay Bryant and members.
The Whitewright Cemeteries Improvement Committee led by Mrs. Emory Christian plans a Oct 1 fundraising drive for Oak Hill and City cemeteries. A $46,592 federal labor grant is approved, with materials and projects to be funded by donations and local contributions.
Whitewright’s Tigers lost 26-14 to Farmersville, facing a 307 rushing yard attack led by Tony Don Craddock and 91 passing yards. Standout Stan Smith ran 176 yards but left with a leg cramp, while Princeton’s 40-0 win over Wolfe City looms as the next test. Darry Vine led Farmersville with 61 yards on 10 carries, as the Tigers battle back Friday.
Mayor Dick Walker remains a patient at Baylor Hospital in Dallas after exploratory surgery last Friday morning. Friends report he is in good spirits, up and receiving visitors, with cards and letters welcomed at Room 3726.
Senator Lloyd Bentsen was advised by the Farmers Home Administration that a $105,000 loan was awarded to the Desert Water Supply Corporation in Whitewright for 40 years at 5 percent interest. Wood Bind Sand Back England serves as president of the Desert Water Supply Corporation.
Coach notes misplays limited scoring as Farmersville falls short despite strong defense. Standouts Stan Smith Jeff Daniels and Jim Clark on offense. Jim Turner Jeff Stader David Spann and Jim Clark on defense. Princeton’s small line and wishbone threat as Tigers visit for Homecoming.
Friday night games showed Princeton blanked Wolfe City 40 0 Celina overwhelmed Little Elm 49 0 Van Alstyne defeated Leonard 27 7 Commerce topped Honey Grove 33 8 Cooper beat Balls 15 7 and Belis edged Tom Bean 10 8, highlighting early showings for several Tiger contenders.
