Cotton crop damage forecast after hurricane hit
Former Senator F C Weinert, manager of the Texas state warehouse department, warns that 1,000,000 bales of cotton in Texas and Arkansas have been destroyed by the hurricane and subsequent rains and winds. He cites up to 50 percent damage in Southeast and South Texas, doubts about reaching the 3,000,000 bale crop, and predicts prices may rise unless storage capacity expands. He notes Texas has storage for about half the crop and expects warehouses to grow, keeping the season viable as belligerents plan to buy and store cotton for postwar use. He sees the South broadly damaged but Sherman area fair, Dallas south poorer, and Egypt 25 percent off. The Dallas News reported.
