Sherman District Reassigns Ministers at North Texas Conference

At the North Texas Methodist Conference held in Gainesville last week the Sherman district announced year ahead appointments. Rev. K R Isbell moves from Sherman to Cooper. Rev. W A Stucky shifts from Cooper to Whitewright. New presiding elders include Rev C A Spragins for Gainesville district and Rev W L Pittie to Sulphur Springs. Other changes affect Sherman area churches and Grayson County congregations with multiple ministers reassigned or renewed for the coming year.

Accident leaves Tom Sloan without left leg after shotgun wound

Tom Sloan age 13, son of Mr and Mrs J G Sloan of Pilot Grove, lost his left leg four weeks after a hunting accident. He suffered a shotgun wound that tore flesh and shattered bone near his home, and amputation eight inches above the knee was performed at Sherman Hospital. Initial hope to save the limb faded due to complications, but the operation went well and he is recovering at the hospital, with plans to return home soon.

Former Federal Agent Indicted in Bootlegging Conspiracy

Caston B. Means, a former Bureau of Investigation agent, was arraigned in New York on four indictments alleging use of the mails to defraud and violations of liquor laws in moving 512000 cases and 12000 barrels of whisky from licensed distilleries to bootleg channels. He pleaded not guilty and sought 10000 bail per case. judge set it at 15000 with time to raise funds. Means had prior notoriety in Chicago murder and forged will cases and once admitted to acting as financial agent for Carl Boy Ed, the German attaché.

Local Boy Honored By Students of T. U.

Austin Oct 23 Will A Boone of Whitewright has been elected to the board of student editors of the Texas Law Review the highest honor in the UT Law School election. Thirty two students were chosen from top scholastic ranks of senior and middle law classes to form the board. The Texas Law Review began last year and earned praise from lawyers nationwide.

Snow first of season falls in Johnson City Tennessee

Snow fell for several hours in Johnson City on October 23 with intermittent flurries and snow beginning to lie on the ground at 9 30 a m. Mr and Mrs R C Norris returned Friday from Dallas where Mrs Norris had an operation at St Pauls sanitarium and is recovering nicely from the procedure.

North Texas Methodist Conference appoints pastors and meets in Paris

The North Texas Methodist Conference elected Paris as the next meeting place by unanimous vote. Dr. Percy Knickerbocker of Paris presented the invitation. The board of education adopted funding for Southern Methodist University, Southwestern University, Wesley College, Kidd-Key, Texas Woman's College, Wesley Bible Chair, and the Summer School of Theology. The annual love feast was at Whaley Memorial Methodist Church led by Rev. D. F. Fuller, recently superannuated after 51 years. Memorial services honored Rev. J. F. Pierce, Rev. A. T. Hightower, and Rev. John Moore with relatives present.

Sheriff of Falls County Arrested

Marlin Texas Oct 22 C O Moore Sheriff Falls County Wesley Hunnicutt former deputy sheriff and Ben Briggs well known farmer were arrested by Texas Rangers charged with illegal sale of intoxicating liquor. Rangers took charge of Marlin jail and seized liquor from previous raids. Plott said he was sent by Governor Neff and more arrests likely. Moore released on 2500 bond while Hunnicutt and Briggs posted 1500 bail each and Moore resumed duties.

Four Japanese Girls Rescued After 25 Days Buried

Tokio officials report four Yokohama High School students were buried under debris for twenty five days after the earthquake and rescued alive yesterday. They endured without food during the long entrapment, marking a remarkable survival in the disaster.

Lyceum Season Opens with The Temple Singers in Whitewright

The first of four lyceum numbers arrives Wednesday evening October 31 at the grammar school auditorium. Season tickets are on sale with reservations required for each program. Local folk visit Sherman for Cotton Belt circus

Mrs G M McNeilly and children Mrs Gladys Magar and children Mrs Emmet Penn and daughter Baby Nell Miss Margaret McMurry Mrs Maggie Montgomery and daughter were among those who rode the Cotton Belt to Sherman Saturday to attend the circus. Many others drove through in automobiles, but their names were not obtained.

Underwood Comes To Speak in State

Senator Oscar Underwood of Alabama will arrive in Wichita Falls Wednesday at 3 10 p m for the first of several Texas addresses. He will travel from St Louis by way of Denison and Gainesville and attend a dinner before leaving at 3 a m on the Denver train to Fort Worth. He plans a state rally in Dallas Thursday and speaking engagements in Austin San Antonio Houston Waco Beaumont and other cities thereafter.

Hog exhibitor wins prizes at Dallas State Fair

Homer Caston of Leonard, formerly of this place, exhibited eleven Poland China hogs at the Dallas State Fair. He earned twenty four prizes across multiple classes and received a 6 by 9 foot steel sign for top futurity points. Caston is building a top Texas Poland-China herd and was elected vice president of the Texas Swine Breeders Association.

Lloyd George Pays Respects to Mrs Harding in Marion

British former prime minister David Lloyd George arrived in Marion at 3:30 AM to pay homage to President Harding. He visited the Harding home the Marion Star and the cemetery before touring White Oaks farm to see Mrs Harding and Dr Sawyer.

Birthday Party for Musie Mae Powell

Mrs. M. E. Powell hosted a birthday party for her daughter Musie Mae on Monday afternoon from 3 30 to 5 oclock.Children played games then lit six candles and shared cream cones and cake. Souvenirs were small horns and a camel pinning contest named Fitz Bryant Jr. the winner. Mrs Powell was assisted by Mrs B Legg in entertaining the children.

Site Purchased for Texas Technological College in Lubbock

W W Caves Assistant Attorney General of Texas C M Meadows secretary of the college trustees and R A Underwood trustee member completed the purchase of a 2000 acre site near Lubbock Texas for the new Texas Technological College. Deeds filed in the county clerk office. The state paid 150000 with Lubbock contributing 91000 bringing the total to the legislated amount. The land averages 120 per acre cash and is fully cultivable with over 1200 acres under cultivation. This marks the first step toward construction of the college.

Whitewright Rangers Fall to Paris High in Texas Grid Match

The Whitewright Rangers lost 42 to 0 at Paris in a Friday football game. Paris dominated after a tight first quarter and treated the Whitewright team as honored guests during their visit, with the Whitewright players praising Paris as one of North Texas' cleanest football teams.

In Dallas at the State Fair the senior yearling boars Duroc Jersey Great Orion Sensation owned by J. R. Oliver of Whitewright took first place. Oliver entered only one hog but plans more entries next year. The judge weighed whether Oliver’s boar or the aged boar prize winner should be champion, ultimately favoring the latter due to age.

Walton Suspended By State Senate

Oklahoma City, Oct 23 Governor J C Walton was suspended by the state senate by a 36 to 1 vote after impeachment charges were presented. The resolution temporarily relieved him of duties and Lieut. Gov. M E Trapp would act until trial as a House and Senate move to address Article 3 accusing Walton of obstructing a grand jury. Chief Justice J T Johnson of the State Supreme Court to preside.
