Quantrell's Flag Return Planned to Lawrence
El Paso, Oct 29. The flag said to be carried by Quantrell during his Civil War raids is in the possession of S. H. Sutherland of El Paso. He says Jack Swartz carried it during the Lawrence raid of Aug 3, 1863. Swartz died at Las Cruces 25 years ago and wished the flag buried with him, a wish not granted. Sutherland plans to present the flag to the city of Lawrence.

Six Small Boys Rescued After Rowing to Spain

M N Vaughn of Rogers Arkansas shipped a car of apples here the first of the week. He arrived before the apples and found two cars already unloaded. He sold the apples to Sherman parties from where they will be sold. Vaughn formerly lived in this area and is well known. He said a fair apple crop was made in Arkansas this year and that prices averaged.

In Elmira New York on October 30 Morrow Willsey three years old died after being spanked his physicians attributing death to acute dilation of the heart caused by indignation. The boy’s father paddled him to curb temper then he stamped his foot staggered and collapsed.

Miss Pauline Beard of Edge, Brazos County, won first prize at the State Fair in Dallas for best home made or remodeled furniture. The piece, purchased in Huntsville thirty eight years ago, was badly dilapidated and once offered for sale to Negroes for 8. Beard did all the remodeling herself, including varnishing and enameling, as part of Texas girls club work.

Ely girl wounded by rifle returns home after recovery
Ruth Bartley nine year old daughter of Mrs. Wilson Bartley of Ely was accidentally shot Thursday October 4 by her little brother with a .22 rifle. The bullet entered the abdomen passing through and piercing the bladder twice and the intestines four times. She left Bonham hospital this week and is about recovered after a period of serious condition.

Pink Boll Worm Claims To Be Paid
Austin, Oct. 30. About $1,000,000 will be deposited in the State Treasury by Nov. 10 for general revenue. The sum will enable the payment of $469,999 in pink boll worm claims and leave over $500,000 to meet current warrants. There are more than 1,600 claims. until these are liquidated no other warrants may be paid. Treasurer C. V. Terrell expects to issue a call to pay these claims within a day or so, sourced from gross tax receipts for quarter ending Sept. 30, 1923, including the 2 percent oil production tax.

J. J. Looney Dies at 69 in Whitewright
J. J. Looney aged 69 died Wednesday at noon at his son's home in Whitewright after two years of ill health. He was born December 12, 1854 in Hawkins County Tennessee and moved to Texas at 21, living near Sherman and Van Alstyne before settling in Whitewright in 1901. He was married to Celestial Kepler. she died nearly three years ago. A Baptist, his funeral was at City Cemetery today at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. W. J. Epting. He leaves children W. J. Looney James L. Looney Ed Looney O V Looney Ray Looney Carey Looney Lester and Alda Looney plus a brother in Commerce.
