Grayson County voters will decide on the legalized sale of beer this Saturday in a countywide election the third since 1933. The dry versus wet split hinges on gaining dry wins in key precincts to counter expected wet support in Denison Sherman and Whitewright.
In Dallas 600 delinquent social security taxpayers are urged to appear for October 30 hearings to file delinquent returns and pay due taxes. About 350 additional persistent delinquents face manual summonses. failure to appear could trigger referral to the U S District Attorney.
The Whitewright Tigers host Rockwall High School in their first conference game Friday night on Bryant Field. Whitewright aims to beat Rockwall, the league’s touted team, after a 6 0 win over Bells on a muddy field.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson urged Congress to reject a military post prohibition plan saying it would foster bootlegging and harm morale. He argued beer on reservations promotes self control and that banning it would drive soldiers to external speakeasies and bootleggers. Senator John Lee defended the amendment as targeted and not a general prohibition.
Miss Mary Dale King, daughter of Mr and Mrs J B King of Whitewright, has been approved for class exemption at Texas State College for Women Denton. The policy grants exemption to students with a B average in all subjects and who file with the registrar. 190 of about 2,000 students receive the privilege. King is a sophomore majoring in kindergarten primary education.
Prison breakers from Stateville escaped Oct 9 are charged in Chicago with failing to notify their draft boards of a change of address. Warrants issued by Federal Judges Sullivan and Igoe trigger nationwide FBI manhunt.
Grayson County establishes eight service points to assist farmers in obtaining war necessity certificates for trucks and trailers. Stations include Sherman county building, Denison chamber of commerce, and locations in Whitewright, Van Alstyne, Gunter, Tioga, Whitesboro, and Gordonville. Farmers serve temporarily to fill applications. bring mileage and tonnage data for 1941 and late 1942.
The Grayson County Log Rolling Association meets at Whitewright Grammar School tonight at 8 pm for station proficiency awards and degree work. Sovereigns from Denison Sherman Van Alstyne and other towns participate in floor work and a street parade. War stamps will be awarded to new members, with refreshments served by Whitewright.
The census bureau reports the cotton spinning industry operated in September at 134.9 percent of capacity on an 80 hour two shift week. This compares with 136.4 percent in August and 123.7 percent in September of last year.

Whitewright schools will observe Nutrition Week with grade by grade activities. Students will perform plays, create posters, study meals and nutritive foods, and complete projects on balanced diets. The Colored School adopts the slogan Eat right to work right and will study breakfast to dinner nutrition. A film titled Hidden Hunger will be shown at Palace Theatre next week.
The Sun invites renewals and new subscriptions at 1.50 a year and promises to add subscriber names to the honor roll next week. This week the roll includes Cpl. Hamilton Vestal, B. L. Sanderson, E. C. Watson, S. T. Montgomery, A. A. Hudgins, Mrs. Olivia Whedbee, A. G. Mullinix, H. B. Barnett, and J. L. Reeves.
State OPA Director McGee urged migratory workers on farms and war projects to stay on the job and not worry about gasoline shortages. He promised ample gasoline when rationing starts November 22 to return workers to their homes, countering rumors that they would be stranded.
Dallas report says Uncle Sam will buy tubes in its tire and tube buying program. L. L. Sisk, regional OWT director, said tubes will be accepted but with no special emphasis. People owning more than five tubes can still receive a gasoline ration card.
The Navy announced the loss of destroyers O'Brien and Meredith in the Guadalcanal battle. The O'Brien crew survived while many Meredith sailors were saved. Leon Bennett of Fort Worth, son of G D Bennett, reportedly was aboard the O'Brien. The Meredith was launched in 1940, named for Marine hero Jonathan Meredith. the O'Brien launched in 1937, named for Revolutionary War captain Jeremiah O'Brien.
Plans are set for the Farm Shop School of Instruction in the new High School shop. Classes run five nights a week from 7 to 10 with Joe Johnson as instructor. About 15 students have signed up. welding and all phases of farm machinery repair will be taught. Open to out of school boys, men, and students at no cost. The shop features electric and acetylene welding, a forge, band and bench saws, a lathe, and various hand tools. It will be open day and night for farmers to repair equipment.
In Dallas officials report scrap metal totals reaching 288,630,264 pounds for two weeks as 112 of Texas 254 counties submit data. Thornton Hill notes per capita figures of 61.9 pounds for reporting counties and 44.8 statewide, with revisions possible as un tabulated school collections are added.
