Progress continues on the First Baptist Church with brickwork nearly complete and ten favorable days needed to finish. The structure will feature over twenty Sunday school rooms and a modern plant. completion expected before year’s start if weather stays good.
Miss Edna Hodge, Whitewright primary teacher, is released by the board to join Port Arthur schools receiving a 27 50 monthly raise. She left for Port Arthur Wednesday after earning many friends here. Mrs W B Cunningham becomes substitute teacher for first grade. she was Greenville primary teacher for six years and recently married W S Cunningham.
The Treasury announced 5000 Texas Independence Centennial half dollars were minted at Philadelphia to mark the centennial in 1936. Congress allowed 1.5 million coins, but production paused as the Austin Texas Centennial committee estimates required numbers. The obverse shows a Lone Star under a standing eagle, the reverse bears Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston with the legends Texas Independence Centennial and Remember the Alamo.
The article notes Texas long has rapid population growth and vast capacity for more people. Census 1930 shows density at 22.2 compared with 41.2 nationwide, implying Texas could reach about 10.7 million if as dense as the country. It argues Texas has extensive arable land and rich minerals to support future expansion.

The offer includes arrears and saves one third on Sun subscriptions, paying less than two cents a week. The Sun honors J. N. Carter, Dr. B. Wrenn Webb, Dr. A. J. Ray, and others this past week.
High Point North Carolina post office skylight shutters are operated by electric eyes to regulate interior light. The Sun advertises sale of typewriter paper carbon adding machine paper and ribbons.

Justice of the Peace J L Cantrell presided Tuesday as two Black individuals faced burglary and theft charges, with bonds set and jail time possible if not posted. A white man pled guilty to drunkenness and was fined, another white man faced DUI charges with bond, and an examining trial was slated for today.
A. M. Bryant has purchased an interest in the insurance agency operated by Paul Stephens. They will run a general insurance business. Stephens has operated with an office in the May building and plans a new office location to be announced later.
The federal subsistence homestead division with FR A support tests self-help building in Crossville Tennessee Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Elkins West Virginia and West Frankfort Illinois. Workers finance materials with loans from the PWA while labor is credited equally to all, aiming for low overall debt and shared effort.
The October crop report shows Texas at 2,345,000 bales, down 38,000 from September, and Oklahoma at 370,000 bales, down from 424,000. Both states fall well below 1933 production and Bankhead allotments, with increases mainly in the Mississippi Valley and states previously favored under the allotment.

The P T A held the first open session of the school year at the grammar school auditorium at 4 p m Tuesday. Julian Montgomery of Wichita Falls was appointed State PWA engineer to replace R. A. Thompson of Dallas. A Texas and Illinois graduate, he has served as city engineer of Sherman and Wichita Falls, assistant engineer at Austin, and state highway and Rockwall County engineer. Montgomery, born in Whitewright, will work to reduce red tape at Washington and advance Texas projects.
Dallas news reports the State Fair of Texas expands free entertainment with acts including Manuel King and ten African lions, Peerless Potters, Four American Eagles, daily free shows, sunken gardens performances, nightly fireworks, and continuous free concerts and recitals through October 21.
Up to Thursday morning the three Whitewright gins had received 1,995 bales of cotton. This is about half the number received last year. Most farmers do not expect much from late bolls as two to three weeks of favorable weather could yield some seed cotton.
A birthday dinner at the Gosnell home south of town celebrated J. P. Autrey’s 77th birthday. Present were his children and most grandchildren, with photos taken in the afternoon. Autrey, a Bethel pioneer, moved from Georgia as a young man and has long served his community and church.
W. J. Young county agent in Fannin County says the Bankhead Cotton Adjustment Administration will receive certificates for transfer to the national pool. Surplus certificate holders should visit the county courthouse third floor to complete forms. The picnic prize list notes Mrs. Smith won the ladies rolling pin throw with a 75 foot toss and Mr. Smith won the 100 yard dash.
In Stillwater Oklahoma rural sociologist O D Duncan of Oklahoma A and M College reports that sons and daughters of farmers marry about three years earlier than urban migrants. He cites five reasons including need for a settled life, apprenticeship farming, starting own business, limited help from wives, and the isolating nature of rural life.
