Grayson County tax official David son says there is no change in voting requirements for residents over 60 living outside Sherman and Denison. The Sun had reported a new law would require exemption certificates. officials checked with Austin and found no such change.
A reunion of Wesley College Greenville alumni and staff will be held at Kavanaugh Methodist Church in Greenville on Sunday Oct 13. Services are at 10 45 a m led by Rev Bill Morgan Smith. Attendees should bring basket lunches for noon lunch in the church recreation room.
Whitewright placed second in the 9th annual State Fair of Texas grass judging contest in Dallas on October 5, scoring 1125 to Gatesville 1133 and Tioga 1113. Doc Taylor and Curless Aldridge earned top individual notices among 144 competitors. senior team members included Herbert Taylor Noel McKinney and Bill McDowell.
President Eisenhower announced plans to launch a 62 inch December test satellite and a 20 inch March satellite carrying scientific instruments. He said there is no danger to U S security from the Russian satellite and noted Soviet rocket thrust while stressing no race with Moscow. Defense Secretary McElroy vowed to speed missile work and end bottlenecks.
Longview Arch Cashell, a state selective service board member and Longview school board member, resigns citing troop deployment in the Little Rock integration crisis. He telegrams director Col. Morris Schwartz that he will not participate in drafting boys who may be used against American school children.
Emory Christian returned from Salt Lake City after the Convent General conclave of the Knights of the York Cross of Honour. He was elected Deputy Grand Master General and is poised for Grand Master General next year. Carl Wood of Petersburg was named Grand Master General with a slate of officers including Albin Anderson Wantagh and Grover Michael Pittsburgh. The 1958 annual conclave will be held in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Agriculture Department sets a 12.401 million bale national crop for the year down 312000 from last month. With carryover about 11.4 million bales, consumption will be met for nearly two years, prompting possible marketing quota controls for 1958. Oklahoma and Texas production figures are listed.
The Sherman District F F A held its annual officers training at Sadler on Sept 30 with graduates from East Texas State Teachers College guiding. Rev. Fred Waldrop of Whitewright was chosen president of the Grayson County Baptist Association at its annual meeting in Van Alstyne. Woodrow Perrin was reelected vice moderator and G. G. Burnett will serve as clerk. Belmont and Dixie Baptist Churches joined the association. The 43 churches reported 817 baptisms, 21,472 members, 13,375 Sunday School, 6,024 Training Union, 4,703 VBS, 1,802 WMU, 1,220 Brotherhood and gifts totaling 734611.35 with 127267.47 for missions. Whitesboro was chosen for the 1958 session. Bethel hosts the first workers conference on Nov 11.
The 1960 census will use fixed census county divisions in Grayson County. Twelve divisions named Batsell Park Bells Denison Texoma DesVoigne Shiloh Fairview Loving Range Creek Sherman Van Alstyne Whitewright Whitesboro were set. divisions serve as permanent identifiable areas with no link to local political boundaries.
In Columbia Mrs Deling Booth confessed a trivial marital fault to her husband of 20 years admitting she used his last razor blade. She explained the incident involved cutting a fish hook from her hand. Separately a note claims Texas Longhorns arose from Moorish and French cattle breeds crossed with Atlantic milk cows.
Mrs. Alwyn Golden wife of the Leonard postmaster died Sunday in a Bonham hospital after a long illness. Born February 15, 1909 she married Alwyn Golden July 2, 1930. Survivors include her husband a daughter Mrs. Bobby McCarroll of Greenville her parents Mr. and Mrs. A R. McMurry of Whitewright a brother Everett McMurry of Lubbock two sisters Mrs. Lois Young of Lubbock and Mrs. Bernice Perkins of Farmersville and one granddaughter.
Funeral services for James Frank Roberts aged 74 were held at Barnheart Chapel with Rev. James Logan and Rev. C C Dooley officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by wife Eva, son Lt Col J Frank Roberts Jr in Morocco, a sister Emmett Penn of Whitewright, and grandson J Frank Roberts III.
Funeral services were held Sunday in the Elmont Baptist Church for Doyle A. Jones 44 who died Saturday at his Van Alstyne home after a long cancer illness. Burial was in Van Alstyne Cemetery. A Whitewright resident for years he moved to Van Alstyne recently. Survivors include wife one son Jerry Jones and one daughter Marilyn Jones all of Van Alstyne and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p m in Sherman for Christofer Columbus Smith 76 a lifelong Ida area farmer. He died Thursday at 4 30 a m Rev Claude Johnston conducted the Baptist rites with burial in Holloway Cemetery. Born in Ida December 26 1880 he married Mary Emma Holcomb December 15 1902 and was a member of the Luella Baptist Church. Survived by Wade E Smith Sherman route 4 three daughters two sons and two sisters among twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A funeral is set for 2 30 p m at West Shady Grove Baptist Church southeast of White Wright for Mrs Bert M Ingram 76 who died Thursday morning at her Nobility Community home. Authorities note her passing occurred at 5 30 a m.
The Whitewright United Fund campaign begins Tuesday with a 7 30 a m kickoff at Ayres Cafe and a $3500 goal up from last year. Charlie Ayres chairs the drive with Carl Edwards and Lakey Edwards as cochairmen and Clint Hennig as president. Twin brothers Harry and Herschel Elliott of Whitewright Texas serve with the Naval Air Special Weapons Facility Detachment at the Nevada Test Site near Las Vegas. Both aviation electronics technicians first and second class USN stationed there since April, they help maintain radar vans and position test aircraft for nuclear detonations.
The Brooklyn Dodgers announced they will relocate to Los Angeles for the 1958 season. Public relations chief Arthur Patterson made the official statement at a press conference, while club president Walter O'Malley was absent, attending a board meeting.
