Whitewright High School Tigers travel to Denison to face the Denison B team at Forrest Park in a late season matchup. Booster Club plans a 7 p.m. caravan with at least fifty autos from the business district to support the Tigers.
Texas Governor Beauford H. Jester urged Texans on Wednesday to take front rank in saving food and to lead other states in addressing the national food crisis. He called for wholehearted compliance with President Truman's program and personal participation to relieve a stricken world.
Whitewright gins reported 1,586 bales ginned up to Thursday morning, up 376 from last week, with 1,269 bales a year ago. Prices stood at 30.12 cents per pound for cotton, up $2.50 per bale since last week, seed at $100 a ton. The season shows strong yield, though some fields still unpicked, with a forecast of late picking possible into December and total receipts likely higher than last year. Local bank deposits exceeded $1.72 million tied to cotton activity.
In a federal case filed in St Louis, Lessie M Walls of Detroit sues his brother Ray N Walls of near Bridgeport Indiana for 10000 in damages. The suit alleges permanent injuries from a May 1947 automobile accident caused by wanton and willful misconduct.
The Agriculture Department announced 56 Texas counties where 1948 cotton insurance will operate, with 699 counties overall. Texas counties listed are Anderson Cameron Collin Donley Hill Jones Knox Lubbock McLennan Nueces Red River Reeves Rusk and Williamson.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 7111 will meet in their hall October 14. Post Commander A B Jones urges all members to attend as the new year begins October 1 with a membership drive. The post highlights aid to veterans, hospital work, and its women’s auxiliary formed in 1946, inviting foreign service veterans in Whitewright to join and support rights and welfare.
Thomas D. Campbell, a leading Montana wheat producer with New Mexico holdings, urged Congress to establish fair price control to move wheat to markets now. He said high prices come from scarcity and farmers hold grain expecting further gains, calling for a fixed price to release stocks promptly.
H R Rhudy 61 a World War I veteran was killed when a northbound freight train dragged him a block after he fell while attempting to pass between two boxcars near the M K T station. He left the Whitewright gin for supper. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife three sisters and a number of relatives. The crew from Denison learned of the accident upon reaching Bells.

Austin report states the Texas Supreme Court overruled a rehearing motion and upheld last term’s ruling that a person discharged from a state mental hospital cannot be recommitted without a formal trial and court order. The Board of Control cannot recommit anyone without a prior court adjudication of insanity.
Covington Ky Helen King appeared in Covington police court today but chose not to prosecute a man accused of knocking her down over the length of her hem. Kenneth Ford of Ludlow Ky was booked on disorderly conduct after an argument with Miss King over her knee length dress in court.
Members of the Texas Press Association approved establishing a Dallas office with an executive secretary manager at a meeting Saturday night. They also voted to amend Texas legal notice publication laws to penalize taxing bodies that refuse to publish expenditures.
National banks received a call from the Comptroller of the Currency for end of day statements. The First National Bank of Whitewright reported total resources of 1,919,097.19 and deposits of 1,729,283.35, a record high since its organization over fifty years ago, exceeding postwar deposits when Whitewright had two banks.
Post 225 installs new officers for the year including Findley Haile as commander and Elbert Bennett as adjutant. Renewal of membership cards is underway with over fifty already renewed for 1948. A November 4 barbecue is planned and a firing squad for funerals was appointed. The fourth district convention with Sam Rayburn as guest speaker is set for October 26 in Bonham. Mrs J P Darwin and Mrs Alva Blackerby sponsored the Junior and Senior 4 H Clubs and, with Mrs Roy Blanton and Mrs Chat Beazley, accompanied boys and girls to the State Fair Saturday. The group thanks Superintendent Caraway, the school board for the bus, and driver Mark Ayers for the safe trip there and back.
The department on Wednesday forecast a cotton crop of 11,508,000 bales after September heat and drought trimmed 341,000 bales. Yield remains well above last year’s 8,640,000 and near the 10 year average of 12,390,000. About 2,750,000 bales are expected to carry over. Harvest gains reached 3,898,767 bales by Oct 1 with 36 percent of the crop picked. September storms dulled lint quality but caused little damage. MacArthur and Nimitz are town names in West Virginia.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized a general 10 percent increase in freight rates with coal coke and ore exceptions of 10 to 11 cents per ton. Railroads may implement the hike with three days notice, adding about 700 million dollars annually to freight costs. The ICC also allowed many Southern railroads to raise basic passenger fares 6.06 percent in coaches and 13.63 percent in sleeping and parlor cars.
