AUSTIN unsuc cessful 1954 lieutenant governor candidate C T Johnson filed a 36300 dollar damage suit against Lt Gov Ramsey Vernon T Sanford and the Texas Press Association. He alleges a conspiracy to evade reporting campaign expenditures by paying Ramsey's ads 12100 dollars and concealing receipts, seeking 24200 dollars in double damages plus 12100 for attorney fees.
John Clift notes the Whitewright Vestal family, 14 children all high school graduates and 11 college grads. Mrs Vestal named Texas Mother of the Year. son a Pittsburgh financier linked to Mellon philanthropy. Baylor publicist C E Bryant sent Vestal files to Hollywood. no word yet on a film.

The Civil Service Commission announced that federal employees with indefinite appointments may apply by Nov 10 1956 for regular civil service status. Up to 40 000 current and former workers may qualify if they served from Jan 23 1955 to Nov 10 1955 and meet time and examination requirements. Reinstatement possible for those involuntarily separated since Jan 10 for non cause reasons.
National Fire Prevention Week calls for farm inspections to curb a 13 percent rise in 1954 losses, with emphasis on electrical faults fuse sizing and wiring checks. Hay storage ventilation and 50 foot clearance for flammable liquids are advised, along with proper lightning rods and safer heating and cooking equipment. Dennis Day quips about dieting ends the item.
Whitewright Tigers meet Class AA Whitesboro Bearcats here Friday at 8:00 PM in a non conference showdown. Whitesboro upset Van Alstyne last week, while Whitewright beat Trenton 26 0 in rain. Conference play starts next week with Cooper, Honey Grove, Wolfe City, and Farmersville on the schedule.
