At a Presbyterian official board meeting held at Rev J F Penders home, unanimous approval was given to build a new brick veneer church. Plans follow pledges already reaching about 14 000 toward a 20 000 project, with work aimed to start by January 1 and the old building to be razed for the new construction.
Oklahoma City and Austin officials opened bids from eight contractors for the Gainesville Denison and Terral free bridges near toll spans over the Red River. The South west Lee Myers Company of Dallas offered the lowest totals: 230 754 for Gainesville 230 294 for Denison and 233 453 for Terral totaling 694 501. Work starts soon.
G. W. Kingry and M. T. Craig assume ownership of a south side Main Street cafe from Mace Schlegel. Schlegel sold the business about two weeks ago to Leonard parties, who operated it for ten days before selling to Kingry and Craig, both experienced restaurant men.
A note burning service was held at the First Baptist Church on Sunday morning. A campaign begun October 27 raised 1,200 to pay off all church indebtedness and the notes against the church were burned.
A city union Thanksgiving service was held Wednesday evening at 7 15 o clock in the Methodist Church. Rev C C Merritt pastor of the Church of Christ delivered the sermon with a choir drawn from city church choirs. The service moved from Thanksgiving morning to evening to allow more attendance.
The 2-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Ray Todd died at the family home near Ethel from burns received when his clothing caught fire from a heating stove on Saturday.
Austin College Kangaroos face Trinity Tigers in the Thanksgiving game at Sherman, a homecoming highlight and key conference affair. The result could influence North Texas standings with Simmons’ bid and a potential Kangaroos tie for top honors if Trinity is upset.
George Clemenceau was laid to rest at St. Vincent sur Jard in France in a simple grave as he requested, without a religious ceremony. His final wish to be buried standing was not observed due to family overrule, while guards kept back crowds and journalists at the scene.
Joseph Doherty, described as an escaped lunatic, was caught parading the streets wearing only a starched collar. Police secured him at once and investigations followed.
About twenty members of the Whitewright Presbyterian Church attended the 11 o'clock service at Garland Sunday. The visit aimed to inspect the new Garland Presbyterian Church and fueled plans to build a new $20,000 church edifice, with work to start soon after the year begins.
Schools post office and business houses in Whitewright will close on Thursday for Thanksgiving. The two holiday recess for schools allows teachers to attend the State Teachers Association meeting in Dallas Thursday through Saturday. This issue was prepared early to observe the holiday.
Grayson County gin receipts through November 14, 1929 totaled 40,894 bales, 2,595 fewer than the 43,487 bales ginned by the same date in 1928, per government cotton reporter Ralph K. Johnson.
R. L. Ramsay, 15 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Ramsay, died at a Vernon hospital Monday from burns suffered last Tuesday at the family home two miles west of Vernon. The child was scalded on the face and chest when he pulled a cup of hot coffee onto himself. Burns appeared not serious until Sunday night, prompting the parents to rush him to Vernon hospital where he died a few hours later.
Pirates attacked a Greek vessel on the Black Sea near Constanza and looted it. The brigands used a ship equipped with modern gear including a hydroplane for scouting.
D Miller of Big Spring plans a December 19 opening for a new drive in filling station on Bond street. The remodeling includes moving the plate glass front back about twenty feet and adding five pumps. Miller will stock automobile tires and accessories and recently moved to Whitewright with his wife.
In Batavia New York four year old Elmer Schulz Jr admitted to police that he fired a shotgun at his mother causing her death yesterday. His farmer father was held and later released as the child described the act saying he aimed and pulled the trigger while playing.
Mena Arkansas police sought a thief who stole the only pair of pants and a pocketbook containing $17 from George Counterman a blind crippled shoe lace vendor while he slept. A passerby later brought the pants to Counterman and alerted authorities.
An attorney hiring a chauffeur asks applicant George if he is married. George replies he lives independently and makes his own living, saying he is not tied to a wife or family.
Andrew B. Camden of Durant Oklahoma invented four wheel brakes after a 1916 Ozark wreck inspired the idea. He received a January 1917 patent, faced rejection from auto makers, sold the patent for $150, and now his idea is valued at a million dollars. He also develops a boll weevil exterminator using poison gas and a gas mask for operators.
R. D. Ford rents the Bryant building on South Bend street to establish a chicken hatchery by January 1. An incubator with a 12 096 egg capacity arrives and will be installed this week ready for operation soon. Ford, an experienced hatchery man, says demand for a local hatchery grows as poultry farming expands.
Indiana health officer Dr. William F. King says few people catch colds at football games. He attributes illness to crowded, stuffy places like banquet halls and homes. He advises staying fairly dry and wearing adequate clothing, rejecting the notion that open air events cause colds.
In Austin a Monday gathering of Forty first Legislators signals a looming special session in January over prison system relocation and delinquent tax collection reform. Senators Holbrook Love Stevenson Patton and Graves and representatives Purl and Montgomery draft a minority report to keep the prison on state owned land.
J. C. Wright, a Gunter man and preacher, testified whisky selling was a side line to his ministry. He pleaded guilty and received one year sentences on liquor law violations from the Fifteenth District Court. The trial linked his preaching to illicit activity.
The Whitewright Ministers' Conference met at the Methodist Church to discuss a city wide revival in January. Each church will hold simultaneous revival meetings led by pastors and local forces to reach all residents. Additional topics included street signs house numbers mail delivery moral conditions and a community Thanksgiving service.
J Frank Parrish of Honey Grove was elected commander of the fourth district of the Texas American Legion in session here Sunday. About fifteen posts across several Northeast Texas counties attended with around 100 visitors.
Sherman resident Lee Simmons was elected by the Texas Prison Board as general manager, with the decision held pending his acceptance. He initially declined, citing commitments in Sherman, and later announced he would not accept the post. The board aimed to replace W H Mead before year end.
William Cloughly was ordered to pay Edith Morgan 2500 pounds after Mrs. Cloughly spread gossip about her. The court outcome centers on a defamation claim with the husband bearing liability for his spouse's remarks.
