Business houses in Whitewright will close Thursday for Armistice Day after a list signed by many local merchants. The Sun will publish on Wednesday to observe the holiday. Cafes stay open for those taking the day off, while no local program is planned.
National Chairman J. Howard McGrath says House and Senate members should decide chairmanships in the new Congress and avoids endorsing any purge. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt urged ousting Dixiecrats and named Rep. Rankin of Mississippi and Senator Johnston of South Carolina as examples.
In Long Beach California a collision between a pedestrian and a car resulted in no injuries to Herman Nagel who escaped unharmed. Otis Knight claimed a windscreen on his vehicle was damaged. The judge fined Nagel twenty five dollars for intoxication.
Remains of 7129 Americans who died in World War II arrived in the United States aboard the Army Transport Lawrence Victory from Italy. Texans total 357, including Whitewright S Sgt Russell R Hicks, son of Mr and Mrs George E Hicks. Bodies go to regional centers then to homes. Hicks’s arrival in Whitewright is expected in about three weeks with notice to his parents prior to funeral plans.
J Kingsley Widmer, 23, a U S combat veteran and University of Minnesota student, faced eight months in a federal reformatory after pleading no defense to draft registration refusal. He said he refused because the Army is not a democratic institution. the judge noted his 10 months overseas would have exempted him.
University of Texas journalism students form the Grass Roots Press Club to visit small city papers and bring publishers to campus. Officers include W. Blake Miller as president and Charles Row Jr as vice president with Joy Fields as secretary treasurer and Ben Hartley as reporter. They note Texas has about 530 weekly newspapers and 722000 weekly readers, stressing small papers' role in journalism.

Governor Beauford Jester appointed R J Potts of Harlingen to a six year term on the Texas state highway commission to begin February 15 1949 succeeding Fred Knetsch of Seguin Potts former Waco businessman and current president of the Texas Good Roads Association has the backing of Senators Rogers Kelley and Kyle Vick and will be the Rio Grande Valley s first representative on the commission Potts a Texas A M College graduate and former highway engineering professor was praised for his planned geographic rotation of posts by the governor

A Holyoke hospital worker said she has paid Basil Keighley for eight years after a necking incident and monthly extortion demands. Keighley, 44, pleaded guilty and is held on $8,000 bail for the grand jury on an extortion charge. The woman said she would increase payments to $60 but earns only $70 monthly.
In Hinton West Virginia the Beckley Post Herald sold November 3 editions for one dollar each. The issue featured photos of Thomas E Dewey and Earl Warren with the headline Voters Choose New Occupants for White House.
Police report a string of break ins stretching from El Dorado Arkansas to Savoy Texas with entry by shooting out glass. Eight Fannin County stores were entered Sunday night and early Saturday, with five in Savoy one in Bonham Windom and Dodd City and Honey Grove hit Saturday morning. Cash radios electric iron tires and batteries were taken as sheriffs investigate midnight activity and cross border thefts.
A Republican Senate subcommittee reported serious concerns over Oklahoma Texas and West Virginia elections but defers final action to the Democratic majority in the next Congress. Lyndon B. Johnson is expected to be seated as Texas senator on January 3 1949 as investigations continue into spending in Oklahoma and possible fraudulent ballots in South Texas counties.
New York. The United States population is projected to hit 150 million by 1950 and not level off until the twenty first century. Census Bureau director J C Capt cited an expected 18 to 19 million rise this decade. Births outpace deaths with a 25.9 per 1000 rate in 1947 and a 10.1 per 1000 death rate.
The Texas Election Bureau reports 1,155,311 Texans voting in the general election with about 40,000 ballots uncounted. Democratic nominees won all eight constitutional amendments, including a judiciary retirement measure approved 324,766 to 262,874. President Truman and Senator Johnson led their races with majorities in the final tabulation from all 254 counties.
Whitewright Superintendent B R Caraway says the Denison Elks lodge offers 75 in two prizes for essays Why Democracy Works. Fifty dollars goes to first place and 25 to second. Local judges will pick winners and entrants may advance to the national Elks contest. Denison and Whitewright schools are the only ones offered prizes.
The Agriculture Department's semi final forecast puts this year's cotton crop at 15,166,000 bales of 500 pounds, up 87,000 bales from last month. Census data show 10,423,934 bales ginned before Nov 1, compared with 8,368,643 last year, with lint yield at 312.1 pounds per acre versus 267.3 last year.

New Hall California Mrs Flora Lee Griffin 25 and her husband Edward were in a honeymoon car crash returning home Saturday. Her nose was severed and found on the running board later sewn back on by Dr. E C Innis. The accident left her hospitalized and recovering. A stray line about pre revolutionary France estates is unrelated.
Whitewright High School Tigers with five conference wins face Howe Bulldogs at 8 p m Friday on Bryant Field. Victory here would push Whitewright toward district honors. a loss could shift the race to Van Alstyne. A large crowd is expected amid a storied rivalry with Van Alstyne.
