Early tabulations from Tuesday's general election show Herbert Hoover leading Al Smith in Texas by a growing margin. With 250 of 253 counties reported, Hoover held a 16 481 plurality as 83 counties were complete and 636 631 votes counted. The Democratic State ticket and a solid Democratic Congress were elected.
Mrs. Lucian LaRoe hosted the Friday Literary Club on November 2. Miss Carrie Hamilton led a program on Cath edrals featuring descriptions of Canterbury, St Peters and Lincoln Cathedrals, Notre Dame, and more. Delegates to the Federated Clubs were chosen, new associates welcomed, and a salad social followed for 26 members. Next week’s topic is Modern Drama with Mrs. Rhom Pennington leading.
In Charlottesville two Thomas Jefferson statues at the University of Virginia were draped in mourning. A placard read Democracy and Religious Freedom Died Nov. 6, 1928. The event coincided with Virginia’s likely shift to the Republican Party for the first time since Reconstruction.
Local HDC members and families enjoyed a masked spook party with games and contests. Miss Barbee led the frightened pupils to return, while news of typhoid fever in Ralph McCarley and a brisk Tuesday vote show a busy week in Pilot Grove. Hoover led the presidential tally with 103 votes to Smith 78. overall Democratic trend noted.
Machinery for the Texas Louisiana Power Company generating plant arrives in the city. A 560 horsepower engine is due today and another next week. Brick work on the main building should finish by Tuesday with roof work to follow. The plant is slated to be ready by January 1. Concurrently a cooling tower and oil storage house are complete and two cold storage vaults are being built for ice and dry storage.
The Mace Schlegel restaurant formerly owned by G. W. Kingery was damaged by a fire in the rear clothes closet discovered about 5 30. The fire dept arrived and a second alarm brought more volunteers. Fire was put out with little building damage. Ray estate owns the building and insurance covered the damage. Schlegel had 500 on equipment and fixtures likely to cover losses. Simmons barber shop and City Meat Market suffered water and smoke damage.
The Daily News Record reports a national cotton forecast of 13.853 million bales with expected ginnings of 10.262 million. State figures list Texas leading at 4.87 million bales, followed by Mississippi and Georgia, among others.
Louis Wiley, business manager of the New York Times, told the Advertising Club of Syracuse that newspapers must cooperate with advertisers. He cited totals showing newspapers spend about 900 million annually, far exceeding other media combined, and stressed honesty and news as core to effective ad copy.
Matthew Patterson, jailed in Philadelphia County Jail, learned he was re-elected to the State General Assembly. He received a five year graft sentence and appeals to the State Superior Court. Fellow Philadelphia Republican William Boyd Smith, under indictment on similar charges, also won re-election.

The Highway Safety Committee urges cautious street behavior for children crossing at cross walks and avoiding running after moving vehicles to prevent accidents.
A curious home economics spoof lists a bizarre recipe for preserving children using a grassy field children dogs brook and sun, then shifts to practical notes on candy making and pocket stitching. It also notes sheet shrinkage when choosing tenth sheets.
Mrs. Jennie Eatherly aged 84 died suddenly of heart trouble last Thursday at 2 PM at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Sears while visiting her sister Mrs. Mollie Aston. She had lived in Grayson County since after the Civil War and was born in Missouri. Funeral service held Friday at 2 PM at the Sears home with interment in City Cemetery. Survived by two sons J. C. Eatherly of Sherman and Hugh Eatherly of Big Spring, two brothers Jim McCoy of Howe and Price McCoy of Bryson, and sister Mollie Aston of Whitewright.
In Covington Louisiana John Dunn, bandaged after a head injury from a collision on the Talisheek road, found his wrecked car and reported his ear, cut during the crash, was missing. He said the other driver did not stop. He later retrieved the car and planned to show it to his wife.
Herbert Hoover carried Grayson County by 1 136 votes as 64 boxes reported 4 838 for Hoover and 3 702 for Smith. Sherman and Denison gave Hoover a majority while total county turnout was 8 530 in this presidential race, far below 1924 levels.
Sherman business leaders expect a conference with toll bridge owners across the Red River. Cone Johnson of the Highway Commission cites illness and delays in arranging talks on buying the bridges. Road work in Grayson County waits on state and federal funds, tied to toll bridges.
Ben Reeves, 55, died in Sherman after a Wednesday nosebleed led to unconsciousness. A blood transfusion failed. Reeves moved from Plano 27 years ago, worked as a blacksmith, then with Hardwick-Etter Manufacturing. He was a renowned machinist in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.

At Maud near Texarkana Walter Springer 74 collapses and dies while trying to free his 32 year old daughter Olia Springer who is trapped under a fallen tree. The stump split as sisters were sawing and the father rushed to help. He collapsed beside his dying daughter.
Rev. J. H. Hankins, pastor of the First Baptist Church, asks The Sun to announce his attendance at both Sunday services. He could not fill the pulpit last Sunday due to Mrs. Hankins illness.

Closing election tabulations show Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis leading with about 5 million vote margin as Hoover carries 40 states after most precincts counted. Smith and Robinson trail in eight states including Massachusetts and Rhode Island with several Southern states still Democratic.
Allie Noble was elected county judge defeating Senator Westbrook 6643 to 709. Noble won the Democratic nomination in August by one vote. Supporters of Westbrook printed circulars urging votes against the nominee, and three votes for Westbrook came from Whitewright.

Dr. A. J. Moncrief of Decatur Georgia was called to be pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sherman to succeed Dr. T L Holcomb who recently became state secretary of the Baptist Board It is not known whether he will accept.
In Whitewright the presidential electors tally favored Democrats by 221 to 129. State and county Democratic nominees each received 282 votes except county judge candidate A S Noble. Ed Westbrook drew 3 votes when voters wrote his name. Republican state office candidates totaled 66 votes and Republican presidential electors 129 with 63 from Democrats. Whitewright turnout exceeded usual National election levels but fell about 100 short of the typical Democratic primary vote.
Seventh grade boys defeated eighth graders 12 to 7 in the latest series game, tying the series at one win each after two matches. A deciding third game is planned for early next week. Whitewright Tigers tied Garland 0 0 after weather delays. Whitewright players briefly crossed goal line but were ruled offside.
Friday afternoon the Whitewright team faces Cooper High on the local field marking Cooper’s first eastward appearance. The teams are judged evenly matched and the Whitewright squad brings a strong recent form, with expectations set on a Whitewright victory.
Dr. George W. Truett, leader of the Southern Baptist Convention, plans emergency offerings next Sunday to address a $950,000 shortfall in the home mission board funds. He toured 10 states with Dr. Arch C. Cree, former secretary, now acting secretary, meeting workers in each state.
Spirited bidding at the Bremen Cotton Exchange for a bale of cotton carried by the Graf Zeppelin on its homeward voyage. The hammer stopped at 14 000 marks about 3500 dollars, won by Clason-Burger Co. for Anderson-Clayton Co of Houston.
The Greenville Masonic Lodge invites all North Texas Masons to a meeting Friday night November 16 where Rafael Aveleyra consul of the Republic of Mexico at Dallas will address the group on peeing in Mexico. Local members plan to attend.
Funeral services were held today for Logan Varley, 19, A. and M. College student who died of pneumonia in College Station. His body was brought to Whitesboro for burial, followed by a procession of sixteen cadets from A. and M. The service took place at the East Main Street home at 2 p.m. and he was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
