Halloween crowds were small as LBJ’s landslide win confirmed pollsters' accuracy. Voters chose liberal over conservative, ending hopes of a two party Texas. Republicans suffered losses including two congressmen and five Dallas legislators.
The writer explains how preemption by a TV program influenced voting flexibility. Despite heavy TV time favoring the Republican candidate, the voter notes advertising cannot sell a political candidate if the public does not want them and questions the overall TV saturation.

A five cent stamp honoring homemakers will debut at the National Extension Homemakers Council session in Honolulu Hawaii. Mrs George Hackney Jr of Greenville, president of the Texas Home Demonstration Association will attend as official Texas delegate. The stamp went on sale nationwide October 27.
Mr and Mrs Bob Hyecock and daughter Sally of Garland spent last weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Obie Rutledge.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Marion O. Miller 87 of Whitewright. She died in a Collinsville rest home and burial was in Pilot Grove Cemetery. She was born August 15, 1877, and survived by two sons, a daughter, a brother, a sister, eight half sisters, a widow, six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for W. Cull Reeves 71 will be held at 2 00 p m Friday at Earnheart chapel conducted by Rev Buel R Crouch of Dallas Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery Pallbear ers will be R A Gillett Gomer May Charles Ayres Roy Blanton Earl Blanton and Roby Childress Mr Reeves died Wednesday in a Dallas hospital He was born July 29 1893 in the Whitewright community son of the late Mr and Mrs W C Reeves He married Mary Higginbotham in 1920 and she died Feb 4 1927 He married Bessie Norwood in 1953 He was a Baptist and a World War I veteran He operated a cleaning plant here about 20 years before moving to Dallas in 1949 where he worked for a clothing store at retirement Survivors include his wife a son Wallace Reeves of Pasadena three stepchildren a half sister Mrs Frank McDonald of Merkel four sisters Misses Blannie Icey and Fay Reeves of Fort Worth and Mrs Grady Sanders of Dallas and two grandchildren
Funeral services were held last Thursday in San Bernardino California for Mrs Helen Lucille Smith 54 of 2239 First Avenue San Bernardino died October 25 in a local hospital Survivors include her husband Marion C Mike Smith a native of Whitewright Texas a son two brothers and two sisters Attending from Texas were Mrs M R Smith Whitewright Mrs Verner Melugin and Mrs Eugene Brown Denison Mrs M B Morgan Vernon and Mrs Bonnie Gentry Wichita Falls
Funeral services held at First Methodist Church in Leonard for Edgar Raymond Rains 74 who died in Abilene after a long illness. Born September 28 1890 in Cole Hill Tennessee he later settled in this area. He married Oleene Vincent in 1920 and moved to Abilene. Survivors include his wife five daughters three sons two sisters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial followed at Burns Cemetery with Wilson Funeral Home in charge.
Local PTA invites parents and citizens to a November 10 meeting at 7 30 p m in the High School library. Dr Kimes head of the Math Department at Austin College will discuss modern math. Miss Julie Johnson will also appear on the program.
Larry Garner 17 remains in serious condition at Sherman Community Hospital after a one car crash on Highway 69 overpass Sunday evening. His car hit the overpass abutment and he was trapped inside when Carl Allen of Denison driving behind struck the Garner vehicle. Allen and his wife and daughter were not injured. Larry is a Whitewright High School senior and member of the undefeated Tiger football squad.
The South Grayson County Medical Auxiliary sponsors a silver tea Friday from 2 to 5 p m at 1216 Hillcrest Sherman. It invites the public on a donations basis to raise funds for special educational aids for the speech and deaf units and offers guided tours of the center’s operations and facilities.
The Hamilton Junior Music Club met Oct 31 at Mrs. Guy Hamilton’s home with 7 members. Carol Dawson and Rhonda Bonds received awards for their musical presentations. Halloween decorations and refreshments complemented the gathering. The next meeting is planned for the last Saturday in November.
Mrs. Don L. Selman rents the Masonic building in Whitewright and will open Clara Jean's Dress Shop for ladies. The City of Whitewright business office vacated the premises this week. Selman is the former Clara Jean Pokey Kelly of Whitewright.
Miss Pattye Badgett of Whitewright is named on the North Texas State University honor roll for the summer session. She is an English major, a 1963 Whitewright High School graduate, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Badgett.
Dill ard Hunter who died in Oklahoma City after a heart attack will be buried there Friday. He grew up in the Whitewright area and was brother of Hugh Hunter and brother in law of R D Maddux of Whitewright. He and his wife are in Oklahoma City. Mr and Mrs Maddux plan to attend the funeral Friday.
A reader letter mocks government spending citing 5280 dollars for a baby setting book and 8750 dollars for flies control. It jokes about future tech and aspirin use, notes tax hikes on painting properties, and ends with a quip about enduring hardship.
The Whitewright Community United Fund completed its annual drive with 2572.50 in hand and pledges, 322.50 over the 2250 goal. Co chairmen were Clint Hennig and Tom Sears. David Johnson presides and thanks volunteers.
An active tuberculosis case in Whitewright prompts a free tuberculin skin test at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Dr Geers Clinic for those likely exposed. County Health Officer Mrs Caraway and a registered nurse will administer the test with a return visit Monday to read the results.
Com munity Hospital in Sherman welcomed Jess Franklin for treatment. Leonard resident Joe Richardson visited Whitewright. Several families from Dallas Bells Garland Sherman and McKinney shared weekends with relatives. Airman John B. Mullins earned Airman of the Month and Quarter in Alaska.
Whitewright voters reached 530 at the polling place the largest vote here. Charles Skaggs, election judge, said ballots were mutilated or improperly marked causing some to lose voting rights. More than a hundred voters did not vote on constitutional amendments. results list Democratic candidates first in contested races.
A two truck collision on Highway 82 in front of Savoy High School Sunday morning critically injured Jimmy Benson 20 of Eldorado Okla trapping him in his cab for about ninety minutes while rescue crews freed him. Benson's 120 head of calves were mostly recovered with some drowned or missing and damage to the truck estimated at $10 000.
President Lyndon B. Johnson designates November 15 to 21 as Freedom from Hunger Week. He urges Americans to cooperate with the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation assigned to lead the observance.
Whitewright high school Tigers take a breather Friday after an eight game win streak. They close the season with games on November 13 at Celeste and November 20 hosting Bells. In a 15-0 victory over Royse City, Curtis Tillett punted, Dale Sears intercepted twice, Joe Hennig and John Holloway produced scores, and Hennig added a 70 yard rushing total.
Community Public Service Company earned second place in its division for the pill utilities section in the National Safety Council Fleet Safety Contest for 1963 1964. At a Chicago luncheon October 29 the company noted 272 drivers logged 4 028 932 miles with a 3.92 accident rate per million miles versus a national average of 12.62.
Roy W. Gilreath reports rains last week slow the cotton harvest in many areas served by the Dallas Cotton Classing Office. Some gins still handle late bales while defoliation and frost timing affect final picking. Weekly sample receipts fell to 19,480, about 432 fewer than the prior week.
