Battle Over Red River Bridge Ends with Sale Approval
In Muskogee Oklahoma Federal Judge Eugene Rice approved the sale of the Col bert toll bridge to the Texas Highway Commission for 50000 dollars ending the long dispute known as the Battle of the Red River Bridge. Former Governor William H Murray mobilized national guardsmen in 1929 and had approaches to the bridge plowed after Oklahoma and Texas built a parallel free bridge on Highway 75. The appellate court had set aside a damages award to the toll bridge company and the Texas Legislature authorized purchase of the bridge franchise and approaches.
