A tornado warning caused panic in Whitewright with sirens and crowded cellars. Residents report insufficient storm shelters and one fatal heart attack after the scare. Other items note bullfrog sightings, summer fogging plans, and local folklore on fillers in papers.
The Church of Christ and the First Methodist Church in Whitewright named new ministers. Gerald Cleveland assumes Church of Christ duties June 2 and moved with his wife into the church home. He is from Paradise and an Abilene Christian College graduate. Rev. John Roberson begins at the First Methodist Church next Sunday, succeeding Rev. J. W. Polk who served two years.
Mrs. Oscar C. Bowen 75 died Monday night after six months illness. Funeral at 3 p m Wednesday at First Methodist Church Whitewright officiated by Rev J W Polk and Rev H W Caraway. Burial Burns Cemetery Trenton directed by Barnhart Funeral Home. Survived by husband Oscar C. Bowen two sons Delmar Bowen Hale Center Woodrow Bowen Tren ton one daughter Mrs A L Griffin Tren ton ten grandchildren six great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
Governor Daniel indicated he will accept a modified version of the law enforcement bill. He wants passage of a lobby registration act and at least study language on crime trends and court procedure. He is also exploring a state wide water district with bond authority and refunding old state bonds to fund a teacher salary raise. He does not expect removal of segregation bills from the agenda.
The Third Sunday Singing Convention will meet at 2 00 p m Sunday at the Cannon Church between Whitewright and Van Alstyne. Everybody is invited.
The Texas legislature failed to enact protective bills backed by the Texas Press Association aimed at ensuring public officials account for every penny of public funds. Lobbyists for officials helped kill the proposals, hindering consumer protections.
At commencement exercises Monday night Whitewright High School presented Betty Williams the Balfour Award for scholarship loyalty and achievement. Betty is daughter of Mr and Mrs J P Williams and was senior class valedictorian.
Three Grayson County 4 H Club members received district and state roundups. Donna Franklin and Bobby Kay Cawthon join Ruth Elaine Williams as all expense paid delegates. Mrs Bob Cawthon accompanies them for state and district events in June.
Esther Cramp, 59, of Elkhorn Wisconsin, obtained a divorce from her husband John Cramp, 55, after testifying in Walworth County Court that he addressed her only with the phrase hey you during their entire marriage. A Bangkok temple reportedly houses a 5 ton statue of Buddha composed of 60 percent gold.
Agriculture Secretary Benson formally asked Congress for authority to set price supports from zero to 90 percent of parity for wheat cotton corn rice peanuts and tobacco. He proposed bills to curb the flexible support formula and push broader market expansion while delaying action and promoting hearings.
Lake Texoma rose to 640.95 feet on Tuesday and spilled over the dam spillway for the first time about 4 15 a m. Highway 75 A was closed as water flooded concession areas and homes around Burns Run and Colbert Boat Club. Many locals observed thousands of fish washing over the spillway while awaiting a potential crest near 645 feet.
Austin voters will consider 12 constitutional changes on the November 5, 1957 ballot, including a 200 million dollar Texas water development fund and a plan for annual legislative sessions with 7500 dollar salaries for lawmakers. The measures also include old age assistance increases, retirement plans for officials, and other county and city reforms.
Savoy Housing Authority and city commission filed with the Housing and Home Finance Agency for 25 additional low rent units after approving a workable city program. A federal representative surveyed needs for the extra housing for elderly with two or more member families and single occupants. In the Adirondacks last fall, about 132 ponds and lakes were stocked with nearly 300,000 trout.

Grayson County Scottish Rite plans an annual fete with a barbecue and reunion on June 1 at Lake Texoma Baptist youth camp, eight miles north of Pottsboro. Dinner at 1 p.m. features a program with music talks and entertainment led by Paul Turney of Sonora, grand master of the Masonic Grand Lodge. Shrine Band and Dallas Hella Temple quartet highlight the music. all Masons invited.
Washington report shows President Eisenhower defeated as the House sticks to a 2.5 billion dollar military cut in the 1958 budget. The chamber passed a 33.56 billion dollar armed forces bill by 394 to 1, with only Rep Canfield dissenting. The Senate faces further cuts as GOP members push for restoration.
