Eisenhower asks Congress for post office funding boost

President Eisenhower asks Congress for an extra 149142 million dollars to sustain normal postal services next year. The request covers restoring a 57.4 million dollar cut plus 92.1 million for workload and salaries, with further 64.9 million for workload, 21.6 million for raises, and 5.6 million for claims. Sen. Teacher Pay Raise Cleared by Comptroller and Sent to Governor

State Comptroller Calvert certified the teacher pay raise bill and sent it to Governor Daniel for final action. Funeral Rites for Mrs. Nettie Fields Held at First Baptist

Funeral services for 84 year old Nettie Fields were conducted at the First Baptist Church in Whitewright with Rev. Fred Waldrop and others presiding. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Sunday morning after a six week illness. She was born in 1872 in Grayson County and lived her life in and near Whitewright. Surviving are three sons Earl Elgie Cecil, one daughter Guy Allen, six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Numerous out of town relatives attended the rites.

Houston area auto crash claims life of John Inzer Montgomery

John Inzer Montgomery 26 native of Whitewright and grandson of the late S H Montgomery was killed in a one car crash on a highway near Houston after attending a wedding at Texas City. Police say he apparently slept before the car struck a guard rail. He helped run his father's Oldsmobile agency in Houston and is survived by his wife who is expecting, two daughters Sue and Linda, his parents a brother a sister and his grandparents Fern D Inzer of Paris and other relatives.

Death of F. D. Miller Advised to Mrs Thompson

F. D. Miller died in Seattle on June 1. His widow survives, with son Fred Miller of Kansas City and daughters Mrs. Claude Kelly of Seattle and Mrs. Thompson. Grandchildren include two. Record rainfall total exceeds year prior in Whitewright

Ernest Smith's gauge in Whitewright shows 37.63 inches of rainfall for 1957, 15.90 inches above 1956. May brought 15.41 inches. Nuell Skaggs tallied 14.70 inches before his gauge was damaged by hail. June rain remains lighter, cotton stands improve slowly while grain crops suffer losses.

Governor Signs Measure Making Parents Liable

Governor Daniel signed a law holding parents liable for their underage children. Property owners may recover up to 300 dollars for willful property damage by children under 18. Effective September 3, the act joins other 55th Legislature measures targeting juvenile crime, including fines for teen DUI speeding hot rodding and unlicensed driving.
