Post Commander Earl Fields says a one week stand for the picnic will run starting July 11 with the event likely limited to the last four days. No picnic occurred last year due to carnival attractions.

Whitewright High School graduating class of 20 will hold Baccalaureate at First Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Sunday May 29 with ushers and a full program. Commencement exercises follow at 8 p.m. Monday in the gym with Judge R C Vaughan delivering the address and diplomas presented by Tom Sears. An 8th grade graduation is set for 9:30 a.m. Monday with Rev Lee H Smith addressing the class.
The Whitewright Colored School plans graduation exercises this Thursday evening at the schoolhouse. The Friday program features the play That Younger Generation starring Alvin Jones Jr and Betty Ann Crowley. Principal J L Huckaby Jr lists top students including first grade Wilmer Marie Rice Della Andrews Glenna Wright. second grade Thelma Robbins Viola Owens. third grade Henry L Roddy William Scruggs. graduating Betty Ann Crowley first and Alvin Jones Jr second with Norvella Owens W L Smith Jr Bubble Owens Beulah F Green and James O Scruggs also in the class.
Whitewright Lodge No. 167 A F and A M plans a dinner at 7 30 p m at the American Legion hall followed by a memorial service at 8 30 p m in the lodge hall Rev Ed Barcus of Travis Street Methodist Church Sherman will speak All Master Masons in the Whitewright area are invited The note also recalls the 1795 nail cutting machine that produced 200000 nails daily.
W S Billy Giles 88 died at his Westminster home after a 12 day illness. Funeral at Westminster Baptist Church with interment at Restland Memorial Park Dallas. Survivors: wife three sons Arthur Verin Glen. daughter Ed McGee. 19 grandchildren 28 great grandchildren. Frances E Stephens 85 funeral at Tom Bean Baptist Church burial in Warden Cemetery. Survivors: son Clifford Stephens three daughters 15 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren.
Richard Edward Proffitt age 14 died Tuesday at 1 30 a m at his parents home in the Ely community after a prolonged illness of 20 months. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 30 p m in the Colbert Oklahoma cemetery. Survivors include his parents and five brothers Yancy D Proffitt Jr Ernest Oliver Proffitt William R Proffitt all in the Army Emmett Carl Proffitt of Hartford Wisconsin and Roger P Proffitt of Ely.
L. L. Wendell asks The Sun to announce the Fifth Sunday singing at Bethel Sunday at 2:00 PM. He says the event is rare and draws a large crowd and urges all to attend whether they sing or not to support the singers.
Whitewright residents led the county in the Easter Seal drive for the Grayson County Crippled Children’s Society near Sherman and Denison. The response is greatly appreciated by organizers and the chairman extends thanks for the community support.
Carl P. Dombrowski told a safety court judge he drank seven or eight beers rather than the usual couple. Judge Joseph J. Butler praised the honesty and revoked his license for one year instead of imposing a fine.
A Denison woman is being questioned by Grayson County Sheriff Woody Blanton over a Sunday night fire at the D. C. Gordon home near Log Lake. The investigation was incomplete. she may face inquiry in connection with other fires in and near Denison.
Whitewright High senior Jackie Pannell will attend Lone Star Boys State at the University of Texas June 5 to 11, sent by Everheart-Thornhill Post American Legion. The program teaches citizenship, government duties, and practical governance through student leadership and mock elections. Pannell, 1954 football MVP, plans to attend East Texas State College next fall and spoke at a Rotary Club meeting last Friday.
Grayson County 4 H Clubs work this week on a Friendship for Korea project led by CROP with the American Korean Foundation Church World Service and Heifer Project. The effort seeks livestock and farming supplies for 100000 4 H youths in Korea plus churches hospitals and orphan homes. Donations of cattle hogs sheep breeding bulls milk goats rabbits seeds tools and money are requested with pickup June 7 and ship loading June 20 in Houston.
Roy Waldrum of Jacksboro will move to Whitewright on June 2 to assume duties as minister for the local Church of Christ. A Savoy native, he studied at Savoy Public Schools and Harding College in Searcy Arkansas. He has served congregations in Wichita Falls Nocona Ft Stockton and Jacksboro. His wife Annie Melligin is from Savoy. They have three children two daughters married and an unmarried son.
Bobby Witt son of Mr and Mrs C I Witt of Nocona former Whitewright residents suffered severe burns in a Dallas gas explosion last year. He remains hospitalized at Veterans Hospital Dallas though he has spent weekends at home since Easter and now walks some without the wheelchair.
Aubrey Lee Burnham, cadet colonel and sophomore mechanical engineering major at Arlington State College, received the outstanding cadet medal. The Fort Worth Chapter ROA presented the award in the college gymnasium. Burnham, son of Mr and Mrs Gilbert A Burnham of Grapevine, is a Whitewright High School graduate of 1953 and has an advanced contract at Texas A&M for his junior and senior years.
Washington reports April consumer cost index at 114.2 relative to 1947 49 average, down one tenth of one percent from March. Lower auto prices and mild rent declines led the drop while acting commissioner Wickens notes true purchase prices fell four percent from March to April.
Gov. Allan Shivers on Wednesday urged a bill to raise the speed limit to 70 mph on divided highways and 65 mph on other highways, arguing higher speeds raise accident risk. He cited Pennsylvania Turnpike data showing more deaths at 70 mph than at 60 mph, noting a reduction to 60 mph on western portions.
A chamber committee sought merchant approval to close on six holidays Jan 1 May 30 July 4 Labor Day Thanksgiving and Christmas through 1956 with 90 percent backing. Eighty plus names signed though many added reservations for fewer holidays.
Herman Musser of Whitewright, a senior, received his fourth track letter from East Texas State. A mainstay of the Lion track team for four years, he helped win three Lone Star conference titles and competed from 100 to 440, hurdles, long jump, and javelin. He placed second in the 440 and low hurdles at Kingsville and ran legs on the 440 and mile relays, earning a gold track shoe for the conference championship.
Savoy ex students reunion set for June 12 at the Savoy school auditorium with Judge J L Reynolds of Dallas as speaker. Annie Hassell Woodward of Durant Oklahoma, president of the association, says the Savoy PTA will serve a noon luncheon. this marks the 18th annual Ex-Student gathering.
