The Whitewright Colored School plans graduation exercises this Thursday evening at the schoolhouse. Death of Richard Edward Proffitt at Ely Oklahoma

Richard Edward Proffitt age 14 died Tuesday at 1 30 a m at his parents home in the Ely community after a prolonged illness of 20 months. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 30 p m in the Colbert Oklahoma cemetery. A Denison woman is being questioned by Grayson County Sheriff Woody Blanton over a Sunday night fire at the D. C. Gordon home near Log Lake. The investigation was incomplete. she may face inquiry in connection with other fires in and near Denison.

Jackie Pannell Named Lone Star Boys State Attendee

Whitewright High senior Jackie Pannell will attend Lone Star Boys State at the University of Texas June 5 to 11, sent by Everheart-Thornhill Post American Legion. The program teaches citizenship, government duties, and practical governance through student leadership and mock elections. Pannell, 1954 football MVP, plans to attend East Texas State College next fall and spoke at a Rotary Club meeting last Friday.

Texas Friendship For Korea 4 H Project

Grayson County 4 H Clubs work this week on a Friendship for Korea project led by CROP with the American Korean Foundation Church World Service and Heifer Project. The effort seeks livestock and farming supplies for 100000 4 H youths in Korea plus churches hospitals and orphan homes. Donations of cattle hogs sheep breeding bulls milk goats rabbits seeds tools and money are requested with pickup June 7 and ship loading June 20 in Houston.

New Minister for Church of Christ Named

Roy Waldrum of Jacksboro will move to Whitewright on June 2 to assume duties as minister for the local Church of Christ. A Savoy native, he studied at Savoy Public Schools and Harding College in Searcy Arkansas. He has served congregations in Wichita Falls Nocona Ft Stockton and Jacksboro. His wife Annie Melligin is from Savoy. They have three children two daughters married and an unmarried son.

Bobby Witt Progress Report From Dallas Hospital

Bobby Witt son of Mr and Mrs C I Witt of Nocona former Whitewright residents suffered severe burns in a Dallas gas explosion last year. He remains hospitalized at Veterans Hospital Dallas though he has spent weekends at home since Easter and now walks some without the wheelchair.

Arlington State cadet awarded outstanding cadet medal

Aubrey Lee Burnham, cadet colonel and sophomore mechanical engineering major at Arlington State College, received the outstanding cadet medal. The Fort Worth Chapter ROA presented the award in the college gymnasium. Burnham, son of Mr and Mrs Gilbert A Burnham of Grapevine, is a Whitewright High School graduate of 1953 and has an advanced contract at Texas A&M for his junior and senior years.

Report shows cost of living lowest in nearly two years

Washington reports April consumer cost index at 114.2 relative to 1947 49 average, down one tenth of one percent from March. Lower auto prices and mild rent declines led the drop while acting commissioner Wickens notes true purchase prices fell four percent from March to April.

Shivers Proposes Speed Limit Increase To 70 on Divided Roads

Gov. Allan Shivers on Wednesday urged a bill to raise the speed limit to 70 mph on divided highways and 65 mph on other highways, arguing higher speeds raise accident risk. He cited Pennsylvania Turnpike data showing more deaths at 70 mph than at 60 mph, noting a reduction to 60 mph on western portions.

Musser Earns Fourth Track Letter at East Texas State

Herman Musser of Whitewright, a senior, received his fourth track letter from East Texas State. A mainstay of the Lion track team for four years, he helped win three Lone Star conference titles and competed from 100 to 440, hurdles, long jump, and javelin. He placed second in the 440 and low hurdles at Kingsville and ran legs on the 440 and mile relays, earning a gold track shoe for the conference championship.
