The Whitewright Riding Club sponsors an Open Play Day at the Dawson Memorial Arena this Saturday starting at 7 30 p m. Events include straightaway barrels, poles, flag race, barrel race, ribbon roping and calf roping with age groups 0 10 11 15 16 20 and 21 plus for men and women. First place trophies and ribbons for places two through six.
The district game will reset as riders from il and ublice clubs participate. The club with the most entries will receive a trophy, reflecting a push to boost participation and competition.
Whitewright coach Howard Hodge says the Tigers will meet Frisco in a bi district playoff at Austin College field in Sherman this afternoon. The 4 p.m. kickoff relocates the game from its previous time.
Twenty eight seniors at Whitewright High School prepare for commencement at First United Methodist Church. Rev Herman Lancaster delivers the sermon, Pat Marlow sings, Rodney Nicely valedictorian gives the address, and diplomas are presented by Bill Dyer.
Whitewright Lions schedule a Monday night fish fry for Lions and wives at the Community Hat. The dinner begins at 7 p m with early frying by J D Callaway the club's fishing expert. All Lions and their wives are invited to attend.
Grayson County Crime Commission president Paul Rice outlined lack of prosecution and understaffing as core issues. He cited that of 1,000 felonies only three reach a jury, bail bonds are rarely forfeited, and county officials benefit from private practice. The group formed 15 months earlier and mirrored Dallas crime reform efforts.
The Whitewright community raises funds for a yearly scholarship honoring Sgt. Jimmy Burchfield, a Whitewright High School graduate killed in Vietnam. Donations total 1454.75 with 100 from Beta Club, aiming for 2000 to fund a 100 scholarship each year. Contributions to Mrs. Gosnell or Mrs. Holloway at First National Bank.
Whitewright City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance to levy a weed abatement tax on property owners where weeds exceed ten inches. The tax is 25 cents per hundred square feet, not less than $25, and applies when the city cuts such vegetation.
Scouts hold an all day car wash this Saturday to raise funds for their Explorer Scouts’ Buffalo River vacation trip. Free pickup and delivery available by calling the Malt Shop at 364-2620. The text also includes tax and city assessment language from an ordinance note.
Bobby McCullough son of Mr and Mrs Gene McCullough Whitewright was injured Monday when his motor scooter collided with a parked pickup on railroad tracks He suffered a broken leg and facial lacerations and is listed as a patient at Sherman Community Hospital
Floyd Bassett of the Whitewright Lions Club attended the Lions Clubs of District 2E2 convention in Sherman over the weekend. The event drew more than 400 Lions and wives, with highlights including golf and bowling tournaments, an address by Norman E. Bresnan of Indianapolis, a Queen’s Banquet and the election of new officers.
Grayson County Sheriff G. W. Woody Blanton remains hospitalized in Sherman in satisfactory condition after an earlier heart attack this month. County officers say he is slowly improving and expected to be released in a few days.
The Porter Cemetery Association will hold an important meeting Sunday at 2 PM at the cemetery six miles east of Whitewright. Mrs. Hugh Hunter, secretary treasurer, says the purpose is to plan for permanent upkeep of the cemetery.
Whitewright Public Library benefited Saturday from a cake and pie sale. The largest donation was a $100 check from A A Vestal, former resident, given in memory of Miss Gladys Ray to fund the Gladys Bay Room. Vestal presented the check through Mrs R C Vestal.
Whittewright Junior High plans graduation Monday evening May 26 at 8 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. George Topper will deliver the address. Valedictorian is Kathy Jarvis and salutatorian is Nancy Stanford. Honor graduates include Susie Bow, Allan Harper, Brenda Hendrix, Donna Kent, Lana Lumpkins, Leslie Skaggs, Debbie Smith, Karen Smith, Jimmy Spann, Mona Stephens, and Carolyn Tillett.
Twenty Bells High School seniors will receive diplomas at the graduation ceremony in the Bells High School auditorium Tuesday at 8 pm. The Baccalaureate Service is Sunday at 7 pm. Raymond Adams announces Johnny Boatright and Pam Oups as Valedictorians with Pamela French as Salutatorian. Additional graduates include Clara Britt Patchy Craft Jack Crabtree Bruce Durell Linda Duncan Danny Garner Billy Hall Sherri Kizer Sandra Krum Monte Layman Jimmy Lowry Donald Mohling Charles Smith Donnie Southerland John Stephenson Elaine Tarpley Jackie Turner Pete Waldrip.
The On The Farm Service themed crop workshop will run May 22 and 23 in Wichita Falls Texas. Ward B Francis a local claims adjuster for the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation will attend. He will join sessions to introduce new loss adjustment techniques and improvements in the All Risk Crop Insurance program. The event explains Federal crop insurance as a government voluntary plan to aid farmers through crop investment protection.
The Oak Hill Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting Friday at 5 pm in Firemen's Hall. All who care about the cemetery’s welfare are invited to attend.
