Riding Club Open Play Day Saturday at Dawson Memorial Arena

The Whitewright Riding Club sponsors an Open Play Day at the Dawson Memorial Arena this Saturday starting at 7 30 p m. Events include straightaway barrels, poles, flag race, barrel race, ribbon roping and calf roping with age groups 0 10 11 15 16 20 and 21 plus for men and women. First place trophies and ribbons for places two through six.

The district game will reset as riders from il and ublice clubs participate. The club with the most entries will receive a trophy, reflecting a push to boost participation and competition.

Tigers Bi-District Playoff Rescheduled to 4 P.M.

Whitewright coach Howard Hodge says the Tigers will meet Frisco in a bi district playoff at Austin College field in Sherman this afternoon. The 4 p.m. kickoff relocates the game from its previous time.

Grayson County Crime Commission president Paul Rice outlined lack of prosecution and understaffing as core issues. He cited that of 1,000 felonies only three reach a jury, bail bonds are rarely forfeited, and county officials benefit from private practice. The group formed 15 months earlier and mirrored Dallas crime reform efforts.

Jimmy Burchfield Memorial Scholarship drive nears 1500 goal

The Whitewright community raises funds for a yearly scholarship honoring Sgt. Jimmy Burchfield, a Whitewright High School graduate killed in Vietnam. Donations total 1454.75 with 100 from Beta Club, aiming for 2000 to fund a 100 scholarship each year. Contributions to Mrs. Gosnell or Mrs. Holloway at First National Bank.

Whitewright Council Passes Weed Cleanup Ordinance

Whitewright City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance to levy a weed abatement tax on property owners where weeds exceed ten inches. The tax is 25 cents per hundred square feet, not less than $25, and applies when the city cuts such vegetation.

Bassett Attends District Lions Meet in Sherman

Floyd Bassett of the Whitewright Lions Club attended the Lions Clubs of District 2E2 convention in Sherman over the weekend. The event drew more than 400 Lions and wives, with highlights including golf and bowling tournaments, an address by Norman E. Library Receives Major Boost From Cake Sale Donation

Whitewright Public Library benefited Saturday from a cake and pie sale. The largest donation was a $100 check from A A Vestal, former resident, given in memory of Miss Gladys Ray to fund the Gladys Bay Room. Vestal presented the check through Mrs R C Vestal.

Crop Workshop at Wichita Falls May 22 23

The On The Farm Service themed crop workshop will run May 22 and 23 in Wichita Falls Texas. Ward B Francis a local claims adjuster for the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation will attend. He will join sessions to introduce new loss adjustment techniques and improvements in the All Risk Crop Insurance program. The event explains Federal crop insurance as a government voluntary plan to aid farmers through crop investment protection.
