The Whitewright Golf Association will host a 36 hole medal-play event from June 4 to 11 for the Presidents Cup on a new six hole course on Mrs. P. J. Pierce’s property. Course hazards include creeks, trees, bunkers, hills, and two challenging par fours and a par five. The best round to date is 27 by W. R. Hooper.
John Mathis a Houston attorney and Harris County Representative will lead a state wide campaign to adopt the state constitutional amendment allowing 3 2 wines and beer. He accepted the leadership and a state campaign meeting was scheduled in Austin. Mathis said a vigorous drive will be carried out in every precinct and he helped draft liberalization measures including the enabling act if the amendment passes.
Rotary Anns will be guests of the Rotarians Friday evening at a banquet in the basement of the Presbyterian Church. The program committee plans secret surprises to honor the Rotary Anns and urges every member to bring his Ann as partner.
Lawrence Westbrook announced Texas would receive 968780 dollars in federal relief funds, to be disbursed this week by air mail. The May allotment had been withheld until the Legislature submitted a 20 million dollar bond issue to voters. Governor Ferguson approved the special election plan.
Miss Mattie Trickey district supervisor of home economics for the State Department of Education visited Gainesville High Wednesday morning. The stop was part of the department’s annual inspections of affiliated high schools. Trickey is a former Gainesville teacher who taught while Supt. Smith served on the faculty.
In Amarillo a group of young boys, after guzzling hot soda water, found they could not crawl back out through a small warehouse hole. Police rescued them, crying inside as officers noted their shapes resembled brownies from fairy tales.
Frank Stewart 13, son of Walter Stewart, was struck and killed by an automobile in Dodd City on Sunday. Two men from Paris, Texas, were detained for questioning. The boy’s grandmother was recently killed by a train within 100 feet of the scene.
A man tried in Guy Stedham's court on theft was found not guilty by a jury after testimony from two defense witnesses and one state witness. The defendant, from East Whitewright, had denied taking any packages from a farm wagon east of Vaughn Service Station. He had recently moved from Kentuckytown.
Gov Miriam A Ferguson signed the bill fixing Texas to twenty one districts after a prior failure led to three Congressmen-at-Large. The State Senate approved a substitute reducing changes to three counties and awaits House action as years ago an AG opinion held districts cannot change until Congress reassigns representatives.
A playful exchange defines waffle as a pancake with a non skid tread. The quip features a teacher asking a student for the definition and a humorous student reply.
The third Monday trades day drew Whitewright’s largest crowd since Christmas Eve. Despite muddy roads, about 2 000 more people visited. merchants reported good sales, including a clothes pin sold by the dozen and eggs bought in seventeen cases. The day featured a daredevil motorcycle stunt and a better rodeo program, with the next event set for June 19.

A 13 hour traffic check at the Y intersection of State Highways 42 and 160 on May 8 shows 623 vehicles, with 574 using Highway 42 and 49 on 160. Grayson County plates total 415, other counties 175, and 35 from other states. A May 13 daylight check logged 833 vehicles, 744 on 42 and 89 through 160, with 560 Grayson County plates, 243 other counties, and 30 from other states.
A weekend storm brought heavy rain and damaging winds across North Texas from Whitewright to Tulip. Homes, barns, and a bank window were wrecked near Sherman and Dorchester, with casualties including a child killed east of Sherman. Noel Grammer, a Tulip schoolteacher and former Whitewright resident, was among those losing a home.
New Jersey voted to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment becoming the fifth state to do so. Prohibitionists failed to file tickets in over half the counties, securing 198 of 226 delegates to the convention within twenty days. Wets expect election of remaining delegates amid lists of other ratifying states.
The Methodist Church holds a 7 45 pm Wednesday prayer and song service lasting fifteen minutes. A varied program follows with congregational members participating. May 24 is Church Night with all members urged to attend and a social hour planned with readings and entertainment by Mrs J D Lowe Mrs L G Hagard and Mrs A L Jackson.
C E Wilcoxson, a Sherman compress official and cotton buyer, suffered a sudden apoplectic attack while driving on North Travis Street. His car struck a fire plug and veered across a lawn before he was found unconscious. He was taken to a hospital and reportedly improved the next day.
Whitewright public schools close May 29 with final exams under way. Eleventh grade exams start Friday and seventh grade exams next Wednesday. grammar school graduation Friday May 26 and high school baccalaureate Sunday May 28 at the Presbyterian Church. Commencement Monday May 29 at the high school auditorium with Dr. J. F. Fender delivering the address. Senior honors name Mary Jo Sears valedictorian and Dick Montgomery salutatorian. grammar school tie Anita Vestal and Dorothy Hagard with Marie Thrasher as salutatorian. Senior Day is May 23 with a 3 p.m. program.
Sunday night break ins targeted the Cotton Belt and Katy stations with about 100 dollars in merchandise and cash stolen. Express rooms at both sites were breached with packages and a pickles shipment taken. No arrests yet though a clue is followed. Whitewright Trenton Leonard Celeste stations also report multiple robberies since January.
The Oklahoma Tax Commission unveils three new license tags. A visitor tag will be free for out-of-state private drivers with a 10 day window to obtain temporary licenses. A monthly tag for out-of-state commercial vehicles costs one eighth of the regular fee. A third tag covers truck trailers.
A New York paper notes powder rooms in Radio City Music Hall feature walls of aluminum and white parchment with peach mirrors creating a sun tan effect.
