The Sun reports a wildcat drill about 1.5 miles northwest of Whitewright is a tight well with limited public data. Three crews continue work in hard formation, progress slow, depth around 4500 feet, and excitement grows for a possible gusher headline.
Washington action looms as railroad engineers and trainmen threaten a strike with the Illinois Central exempted as a safety measure under government transport control. Alvanley Johnston, head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, confirms the exemption and cites no stated reasons beyond safety. The Smith Connally Act imposes penalties for strikes against government facilities, while President Truman vows seizure if a crippling strike threatened. Johnston says the exemption stands for now and may be reconsidered.
Denison Protestant churches will discontinue Sunday funerals starting May 19. Rev. Guy D. Newman of First Baptist Church and the Denison Pastors Association led the policy, citing pastors’ Sunday workload and precedent in other towns. Catholic practice and cemetery charges on Sundays were cited as context.
In Portland Oregon a week after birth twin girls joined at the base of the spine died in hospital. One twin died at 8:35 a m and the other 25 minutes later. The 26 year old mother Edward Horse of Deep River Washington felt both sadness and relief. Attendants said she dreaded the outcome but hoped for the best. The babies were born joined in an X shape and would not have walked.
Troop 1, Boy Scouts of America, will meet Friday at 7 p.m. All members are urged to attend. Any boy twelve or older interested in joining may be present. Summer Camp begins June 9. to be eligible, tenderfoot tests must be passed and the boy registered. Scoutmaster Rev. Bob Gilpin notes Friday is the deadline for these requirements.
The Whitewright Parent-Teacher Association will meet Tuesday May 21 at 3 p m in the grammar school music room. Mrs J E Christian president will preside. The second grade under Miss Nelle Brown will present short numbers. Rev E P Wootten pastor of First Baptist Church will speak on Whats Happening in Education and show a moving picture. All interested are urged to attend as this is the final meeting of the school year.
In Texarkana a 35 year old man shot while peering into the Emmett Giles tavern window is not a suspect in a string of local slayings. He and a companion are jailed on drunkenness charges after a night of drinking and a late night stop for one more beer.
A committee of 100 prominent citizens urged President Truman to restore food rationing to curb world hunger. Led by former New York Governor Lehman and Clarence E. Pickett, they proposed immediate emergency rationing using sugar stamp ration books and a long range plan covering the next year or two.
W. W. Gunn AAA administrator said 1,100 milk producers in Grayson County received more than $56,000 in subsidy payments for January through March. Payments total 17 cents per pound for butterfat and 70 cents per hundred pounds for milk, a quarterly figure Gunn called favorable compared with past payments.
Eight 4-H Club boys from Grayson County won registered Duroc Jersey gifts in the Sears Roebuck Foundation essay contest. Winners wrote on the advantages of the cow hog and hen farming plan. Awards were announced at Dairy Day in Sherman. Carroll Pennell won the boar.
Roy Blanton commander of Preston Everheart Post announces the 4th District American Legion Convention will meet in Sherman Sunday at 10 a.m. World War II veterans are invited and automobiles will pick up those without a ride at 9 a.m. in front of the Legion Hall.
Secretary Clinton P. Anderson urged farmers to reduce hog output by 10 percent next fall due to limited grain. He warned meat supplies will tighten next winter and spring as grain prices rise to boost export prospects, though meat may be temporarily more available in the coming months.
The VEW Post 7111 met at Grammar School auditorium with good attendance. Three new members were received. Commander A B Jones announced four new officers and a plan to remodel a club room and buy chairs. A softball team was formed, Oswald Neal captain and Roy E Martin manager. The post aided on job training signups with four firms, and expressed gratitude to the school board and Byron Caraway for facilities.
Sherman Judge Randolph Bryant of the U S District Court ruled that white and Negro teachers must have the same salary if they share similar qualifications and duties. In Sammie Taylor Savage versus the Denison School Board, the court ordered the board to desists in discrimination and raise salaries on an equal basis.
Scientists and engineers claim lightning-proof electric service edges closer after a half century of study. Arrester devices, from thimble-sized to two-foot pedestals, protect lines and low voltage systems, reducing outages and losses.
The Whitewright Home Demonstration Club won first place at the Grayson County Dairy Show in Sherman for its display On Butter and Its Contribution to Health. Twelve clubs exhibited. second went to Van Alstyne for cheese and third to Whitesboro for milk as a daily diet. Attendees from Whitewright included Mrs. Ralph Wallace and several other local demonstrators.
Dr Charles E Schofield author editor and college administrator will discuss A Faith for Days Like These over an independent regional network of 38 stations on The Methodist Hour Sunday morning May 19 from WSB Atlanta at 830 a m EST The program is presented through the Southern Religious Radio Conference a cooperative endeavor of the Southern Baptist Convention the Presbyterian Assembly and The Methodist Church May broadcasts show inter denominational cooperation with all three denominations changing schedules All programs of the conference are heard on WFAA Dallas at 730 a m with Dr Lester Rumble pastor of St Mark Methodist Church Atlanta offering the prayer and introducing the speaker
Jerry Sadler former railroad commissioner opened his bid for governor with a Texas tour starting June 15. His campaign headquarters staffed by ex soldiers sailors marines and Seabees announced a plan to travel every county with a busload of Texas born players and singers from the Grand Old Opera troupe of Nashville. The headquarters described as a three room outlay called a Command Post.

DACHAU Germany a general military court on Monday sentenced 58 operators of the Mauthausen extermination camp to hang. Three others received life terms. The 61 defendants were found guilty of murdering thousands of victims in Nazi persecution campaigns by an American court.
Ramon Cadenas hid his savings on a farm near El Paso for 13 years. He traveled to town with 12000 in bills to close a land deal but lost his purse yesterday. He offers a 1000 dollar reward for the return of the money today.
Beginning with a 1.44 inch rain on Sunday weekend and Sunday night, rainfall increased to 2.27 inches for the week. May to date is 2.60 inches and the year 13.32. Whitewright saw light hail with the rain, while southwest areas reported damaging hail. Yearly rainfall lags 1945 by about 35 percent, with 1945 months and 1946 months listed. January through April rainfall amounts are noted for both years.
Washington reports deadlocked coal peace talks after John L. Lewis demanded a 7 percent payroll levy. Negotiations failed to produce a signed contract and moved to the White House for Thursday discussions. Government conciliators halted talks as operators rejected a union funded health and welfare plan financed by mine owners. Synder said the President would take every possible action if no deal is reached.
Amarillo man and former Whitewright postmaster B P Brents won a B-17 Flying Fortress in a contest after writing an essay on what he would do with one. The four engine bomber, hangared at Stillwater, cannot be flown by Army personnel or civilian pilots, leaving Brents dreaming of another essay about not having a fortress. He suggested the B 17 would aid Boys Ranch near Amarillo.
Britain formally adopts Magna Carta as the proper title after a Lord Chancellor explains the extra H was a 15th century copyist error. The House of Lords approves dropping the H to reflect Runnymeade 1215 tradition.
Dr. David Bosserman, a retired physician and orchard owner, devised a woodpecker control method for his citrus grove. After initially shooting intruders, a friend suggested a recipe, and woodpecker meat is now a dietary item in the Bosserman home.
Washington OPA raises retail ceiling prices for clocks and inexpensive watches by about six percent to cover higher wages and materials. The policy, effective immediately, covers spring wound and electric clocks and watches with seven jewels or fewer.
