Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied Erwin Bowles of Fannin County a writ of habeas corpus over a 3.2 beer sale charge. It upheld Fannin County’s 1903 local option and rejected Bowles’ claims that the state lacked authority after the 21st Amendment.

A rabid dog appeared in Whitewright on Monday and bit several dogs in distant parts of town. Unknown individuals poisoned a number of dogs Monday night and Tuesday, reducing the canine population.
John W McMurry Jr son of Mr and Mrs J W McMurry Whitewright has been chosen head coach for Gainesville junior college and high school to replace Virgil Ballard who left for Texas Tech. McMurry previously coached at Lubbock High School and starred at Austin College.
The Palace theatre will install a cooling system in the next few days to modernize the venue. New sound equipment has been added recently, with other improvements and nightly programs drawing more public interest. A $20 cash prize will be awarded next Tuesday at 9 o'clock. previous $10 prize went unclaimed by Miss Lucille Garner of Trenton.
Two people died and several injured after a boiler in a Tyler dry cleaning plant exploded, sending the boiler into an adjacent auto supply office. Victims include Miss Lucy Lee Andrews and William Pope. others hurt include J. D. Burkett, John W. Young, Earl Andrews, and C. C. Carter as windows shattered and a wall blew out.
The Friday Literary Club of Whitewright sponsors a yard beautification contest with judging in the first week of June and prizes for best yards by non members and club members, best rose garden, lawn, back yard, parkway, and a public place planting. entrants urged to call Mrs. C P Johnson or Mrs H P Donigan before June first. Miss Emily Marshall, a University of Missouri junior, scored perfect in 30 rifle matches.

Final exams for other grades May 29 June 1. grade school graduation June 1. baccalaureate June 3 at Methodist Church. high school commencement June 4.
Chester Delisle of Ross Oklahoma faces trial May 15 for robbery with firearms in the Whitesboro National Bank looting. Judge Carter ordered a 250 member jury pool as defense seeks delay. Delisle pleaded not guilty and signed a waiver for venire notices by postcard. Calvin H. Smith and Charlie Frazier remain jailed on $10,000 bonds.
The Grayson County Young Democrats will hold a meeting in Whiteswright at 8 p.m. Tuesday May 15. Bob Sears announces the event at the American Legion hall. Delegates from Sherman Denison and other county areas will attend to learn the group’s aims.

A Kentuckytown and Whitewright Board of Education committee met Tuesday to seek improvements on a quarter mile of the Whitewright Kentuckytown road. The bus now must detour through mud about a mile. The groups will present the issue to the County Commissioner soon. The board re elected Miss Tommie Chenoweth as music teacher and Miss Lucille LaRoe as expression teacher for next session.
For the week ending April 14, 3 038 Texas establishments reported a 16.4 percent rise in workers employed and a 15.5 percent increase in payrolls versus the same firms a year earlier. Between March and April payrolls rose 1.2 percent while employment grew less than 1 percent. Higher than average job gains occurred in Port Arthur San Angelo Dallas Austin and Wichita Falls.
Sheriff J B Benton Davis announces his bid for reelection to Grayson County sheriff. Serving his first term, he highlights a record of reducing bank robberies and other crimes with his deputies and seeks continued support. His formal announcement will run in a later Sun issue.
